This Weekend at the Movies: January 22, 2010
Not exactly a group of openers that inspires movie going
A bit of a strange week as my only new review at the moment is my review for Daybreakers which I went and saw at a matinee just recently after David persuaded me to do so with his recent contribution to "The Goods". He talked a big game and if you want to see if I agreed just click here to read the full review.
Other than that we have two films I skipped the screenings for, which is explained below, another I caught a midnight screening of tonight and will have a review online in the morning and finally one more that I just couldn't seem to get anyone to show me. So, here we go with four titles I have very little to say about just yet, but I will be able to go into more detail on one of them very shortly.

Screen Gems didn't screen this for critics, but I did just get home from a midnight screening of it from a local cinema in Mountlake Terrace. I don't want to give too much away and have you avoid my review when I post it, but let me just say there is a reason Screen Gems didn't preview this one for critics and it is well-deserved of its late January release date. This film is rated R for strong bloody violence, and language.

This one was screened and I skipped it. I never saw The Rock in The Game Plan and never saw Vin Diesel in The Pacifier and this one looks to be along the same lines as those two and those just aren't films down my alley, much like last week's The Spy Next Door. So, rather than head to a theater with the expectation of having a bad time and being forced to write a review I have little interest in I decided to leave well enough alone. I leave the decision solely up to you. This film is rated PG for mild language, some rude humor and sports action.

I also avoided this one based on the fact it looked like a Lifetime made-for-TV movie with bigger names. I have, however, heard it's not that bad although the critic that told me that also confirmed to me it isn't much more than a Lifetime made-for-TV movie with bigger names. Generic is what I call that. This film is rated PG for thematic material, language and a mild suggestive moment.

This one wasn't screened here in Seattle and every time I asked the PR firm representing the film to send me a screener I got no response. Not sure why, but from the word-of-mouth on this film I feel as if I have been saved. This film is rated PG-13 for some intense thematic material.

LEGION
"Wasn't Screened for Critics" – that's all I needed to hear to stay away from this one.
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES
Based on critics reviews and the beyond-sappy trailer, this is one film that should have stayed a Lifetime movie – not really sure how this one saw the light of day at the multiplex.
TOOTH FAIRY

CREATION
While the idea of a biopic on Charles Darwin had me all excited, particularly when I heard that it would be starring Paul Bettany (which still puzzles me as to why the studio would open two Bettany vehicles against one another), the reviews for this film have been less than stellar. Will probably save this one for a rainy day Netflix download.
Overall this weekend sucks. It really feels like January at the multiplex now; however, given the fact that its awards season, many independent gems are being released each weekend – so I'll be busily catching up on lost time while all the Legions and Tooth Fairies shuffle through one door and out the other.
yeah I didn't feel Legion would be very good. The trailers were a bit painful to watch, IMO. But I left a smidgen of hope for it, but you have now convinced me that it is indeed, what the trailer made it look like.
I'm either watching Avatar for the third time or giving a re-watch to the whole Godfather trilogy which I haven't seen in more than 4 years and has finally purchased the DVD set just yesterday. Also got A Serious Man downloaded, 'cause the russian distributors clearly don't give a shit about it and don't plan on releasing it theatrically. Going to be a tough choice.
Haven't seen "Legion" yet, either. Will be doing so by next week, though. Same with "Creation."
Both "Tooth Fairy" and "Extraordinary Measures" were actually kind of good. Sue me. I like most of this month's releases, or at least, I don't hate them. "Tooth Fairy" was predictable, pandering, and helluva lot of fun to watch. Good, not great, but definitely worth renting with your kid. "Extraordinary Measures" was an uneven success, based on the story itself. It won me over.
@Nick: Watch 'A Serious Man' first. Likely the most demanding of all your options, but definitely one of the more rewarding ones.
