Well, it's the final weekend of 2009 and we have a couple of wide releases to discuss including the much anticipated Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Meyers's latest outing It's Complicated. I hope all of you are enjoying your holiday weekends and if you aren't celebrating anything I still hope you have a great weekend and thanks for continuing to visit.

2010 is just around the corner and I can't wait to have another great year at the movies.

Sherlock Holmes
I'm not at all surprised this is the most popular title on the site as we move into the finaly holiday weekend of 2009. Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. and coming off Iron Man he's pretty much the man of the hour. Unfortunately this film didn't exactly live up to its billing for me, but my suggestion is to still go see it and simply lower your expectations and you should be rightly entertained.

This film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material.
It's Complicated
I laughed a lot while watching this and I think its target demographic is going to eat it up. I'm not sure how far down the difference in ages it will translate, but it's hard not to have fun with it as long as you don't take it too seriously.

This film is rated R for some drug content and sexuality.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Heath Ledger's final film makes its way into theaters today and while it isn't the greatest of films, it's nice to see Sony Classics pick it up and give it a theatrical chance, although it's a limited theatrical chance and I expect this one will be on DVD and Blu-ray before too long.

This film is rated PG-13 for violent images, some sensuality, language and smoking.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel
I never saw the first one and had no intention of seeing the second one. However, that doesn't mean everyone followed my lead as Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel opened to $18.8 million on Wednesday, beating Avatar and putting something of a question mark on the three-day box-office weekend. Of course, that kind of an opening would lead me to believe it won't be carrying that much weight into the weekend, but wow is it a lot.

This film is rated PG for some mild rude humor.

  1. I'm seeing both "Up in the Air" and "It's Complicated" today. It should be a great day. Happy holidays!

@The Pork Chop Express: You will LOVE "Up in the Air." Truly. Brilliant film.

As for these, I hated "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," was underwhelmed by "Sherlock Holmes," and enjoyed "It's Complicated" quite a bit.

    Merry Christmas, everyone!

I believe The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus goes wide on January 8.

I chose It's Complicated to underwhelm at the box office, though it is the only adult comedy out there. If I was choosing a title for this film it would be "Typical Hollywood Infedelity & Drugs That Fantastically Don't Mess Up Your Life". Avatar was ten times more realistic. Umm…. Happy Holidays.

I'll be watching Avatar again. Whatevs.
