This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: November 10, 2009
COMMENTS
It's Pixar week in stores...
Up | |
| I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details. Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. | |
Monsters, Inc. | |
| Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. Like Up this is a must buy this week. | |
Ballast | |
| This is a fantastic film worth seeing once. I don't say this because it isn't worth repeat viewings as much as I believe you get everything out of it in that first viewing and unless you are looking for a serious lesson in top notch editing then you will have your fill. You can read my theatrical review of the film for more information, but this is definitely a title I recommend you check out. | |
The General | |
| I wonder about this title, is it really necessary to have The General in high definition? Then I head over to DVD Beaver and look at the screen captures and instantly notice MAJOR differences. I think I may be adding this one to my Christmas list. For those of you that have not seen this head on over to Netflix and watch it on Instant Play, it is a fantastic Buster Keaton comedy that will most likely surprise you even if you don't like silent films. | |
My One and Only | |
| My One And Only is releasing this week exclusively at Target stores, which is a move I don't particularly understand since I would assume when it comes to little-known movies a larger release would be the more beneficial release. You can read my "B-" review of the film right here, but the short of it is to say this is a perfectly decent film with an impressive performance by Logan Lerman who will next be seen in 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, a film that could make a him a big star, or could have him following in the footsteps of Eragon's Ed Speleers. We'll have to wait and see. | |
Spread | |
| Ashton Kutcher. Pass. | |
Heat / The Negotiator / Logan's Run Warner Home Video Blu-ray | |
| Short note, I listed these three as releasing last week and it turns out they are hitting shelves this week instead. However, this did allow me time to watch Logan's Run for the first time and while it is an interesting social commentary that will most likely never go out of style I didn't get a whole lot out of it. I did see a lot of similarities to George Lucas's THX 1138, especially a shot in the middle of the film that almost mirrors the end of THX exactly. Then again, I didn't like THX 1138 at all, so I guess the fact Logan's Run mildly amused me is a statement all of its own. Now… I may have to give THX a third go 'round. | |

Those Blu-Ray captures of The General look great. It makes me tempted to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player, but DVD's are just so much cheaper.
I wonder if this watchmen edition will be the best with the animated Black Freighter intervoven in the story. That's why I was looking forward to its review.
Isn't "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" released today?
