'True Blood' leads the way and plenty of new titles are announced

Before we get started there are a couple of things to point out. First off, Universal is selling quite a few of its DVD catalog titles for cheap as part of a promotion and including Movie Cash for one ticket to see Land of the Lost. One title I noticed on sale for only $9.99 was the 30th Anniversary Edition of Jaws, which you can buy directly right here, or you can search all of the titles by clicking here.

Harry Potter Gift Set, The Fountain, Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Purple Rain, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, GoodFellas, The Fugitive, Enter the Dragon, Dog Day Afternoon, The Dirty Dozen, The Cowboys, Constantine, Bullitt, Blood Diamond, Blazing Saddles, Battle for the Bulge, The Last Samurai, Syriana, The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby and Lethal Weapon

Next, on April 23 I decided to take Warner Home Video up on their Red2Blu program in which you can replace your HD DVD titles for Blu-ray for a small fee. All you have to do is select the titles you want to replace at Red2Blu.com, take the cover art from your HD DVDs, send them in and they will send you the same title on Blu-ray. It costs $4.95 per title plus a $6.95 shipping and handling fee per order (NOT per disc). So no matter how many titles you are converting it will only cost $6.95 for shipping and handling. The service allows you to send in up to 25 HD DVD titles per household.

My order cost me $149.39 because I also exchanged the Harry Potter 1-5 Limited Edition Giftset, which cost $14.95, but it also meant I was getting 29 of my HD DVDs replaced with Blu-ray discs instead of 25 (score!). The order went in on April 23 and yesterday, May 18, I received the complete order in one big shipment. I opened the nine-pound box and, as you can see from the image above, I have a whole slew of new Blu-rays for the shelf. If you are interested in participating just click here and get rid of those HD DVDs so you can get rid of that HD DVD player. I can't tell you how much I love this deal since I was already in the process of buying the titles myself, which would have ultimately cost a fortune. I had already replaced the entire Stanley Kubrick collection and many others, this just saves money and in less than four weeks you will be one happy camper. Now, hopefully Universal and Paramount will get on board with a similar deal.

Finally, I am not sure if you always check the new release dates at the bottom of this article, but you are going to want to today as I have added more than 30 new titles to the database in the last week including Watchmen, Coraline, Criterion's Blu-ray of Kagemusha and Fast and Furious. Beyond that, we have a lot of titles this week so let's get started.

True Blood – The Complete First Season
The DVD edition is the #1 selling title for this week (and overall) at Amazon and the Blu-ray edition is #5 so to say there isn't a serious amount of love for this HBO series would be to claim complete ignorance. Back when the show first hit HBO and I was reviewing the episodes I had a small following, and it looks like I should have pushed HBO to send me more episodes, but I won't make the same mistake for the second season once it begins on June 14 as I have already spoken with HBO and will be reviewing it on an episode-by-episode basis. So, you may want to check out the first season to get all caught up.

Paramount Centennial Collection
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance / El Dorado
Here we have a pair of solid John Wayne films and Paramount has once again offered up a heavy dose of features as their Centennial Collection now contains nine titles and each has the feel of a Criterion edition as they are loaded with special features and fantastic audio and picture quality.

Between these two new additions to the Collection, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the better of the two, but that isn't to say El Dorado is a bad film. I would actually recommend you buy El Dorado, but I prefer Rio Bravo as both are extremely similar films, which is another Howard Hawks film starring John Wayne and if you noticed above, it was one of the titles I replaced with Blu-ray. I guess it comes down to whether you prefer The Duke with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson as he is in Rio Bravo or with Robert Mitchum and James Caan as he is in El Dorado. It's a tough choice to be certain so perhaps owning them both is the only option. I will say this, James Caan's performance in El Dorado is eye-opening if you only know him for his more recent roles. Not even his performance as Sonny in The Godfather can prepare you for this one. You won't even recognize him as he appears to be something more of a young Paul Newman than anything else.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, on the other hand, is a fantastic feature directed John Ford and along with Wayne has James Stewart as a big city lawyer who gets into a bit of trouble with the local criminal of the small town of Shinbone. Stewart is perfect as the innocent do-gooder, Lee Marvin is just as great as you would expect him to be as the evil Liberty Valance and John Wayne is there to tie it all together. If you like westerns you couldn't go wrong with either of these titles.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle (Criterion Collection)
There is a bit of a running theme going here as I just discussed El Dorado which co-stars Robert Mitchum, and the Blu-rays I mentioned from the outset contain Rio Bravo starring Mitchum and Bullitt directed by Peter Yates and now we come to Criterion's release of the 1973 crime drama The Friends of Eddie Coyle which is directed by Yates and stars Mitchum. I am going to have a complete review of this one up later tonight or tomorrow so I won't say much now, but this is certainly a great film and probably the best I have seen from Mitchum, but I am not sure you can actually judge a Mitchum performance before seeing them all as he seems to be very much a chameleon, and I certainly haven't seen enough to judge.

This Criterion release comes with a stills gallery, an impressive 44-page booklet and a commentary by the 79-year-old director Peter Yates. If you were wondering, yes, he sounds like he is that old, but more on that later.

A Bug's Life
I had a chance to watch this Blu-ray a couple of nights ago and, as expected with pretty much all animated films of the CG age, this one looks great. Perhaps the most interesting thing about watching this film again for the first time in a long time is to see how much Pixar has changed in the way it tells its stories. Like most animated films, this is a simple morality tale, but Pixar is no longer interested in simple storytelling. Their films have become a bit more complex and have started carrying social messages. It's up to you if you like the simpler stories or the more embellished (and occasionally egotistical) storytelling Pixar has embraced. As far as early Pixar goes I think Toy Story and A Bug's Life are their two best prior to Finding Nemo. This new Blu-ray is sure to impress anyone that enjoys the film and it comes with a pair of Blu-ray exclusive features including a never-before-seen animated sequence from the original story treatment and a filmmakers' round table in which they take a look back at the creation of the film.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition)
I am actually watching the single-disc Blu-ray edition of this right now (even though I don't necessarily like it) and it comes with the 1991 theatrical release as well as the 1993 extended cut with 16 minutes of additional footage. On top of that it has a couple of in-movie Blu-ray features, two audio commentaries, quizzes and a whole lot more. However, the picture you see in the background is the six-disc Complete Collector's Set that comes packaged in a 14" T-800 Endoskull… For a complete list of all the special features click here, but I have a guess the trailer below will answer most of your questions.

Oh, and before you watch that you may want to check out this cool little T2 vs. T3 comparison as someone has found the two films are drastically similar in a weird kind of way.

Schwarzenegger Collection
Terminator 2 / Total Recall / Red Heat / The Running Man
I am including this here for one main reason, it gives you four classic Arnold Schwarzenegger films for only $21.99. The version of Terminator 2 is the 2003 2-Disc Extreme Edition with the extended version of the film. The Running Man is the 2004 Special Edition with a pair of audio commentaries. Red Heat is also the 2004 Special Edition and Total Recall is the 2001 Special Edition with an audio commentary with Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven.

Believe it or not, I didn't actually own any of these movies before I received this set and now I own both the DVD and Blu-ray edition of Terminator 2 and, more importantly, can watch Total Recall for the first time in about 10 years, if not longer. Considering the films it includes, this set priced at $21.99 sounds like a good deal to me.

Spy Game
This title and the next one go well together and I really recommend if you buy one you should buy the other. As for Spy Game, this is, in my opinion, Tony Scott's last good film and it is one I truly love. However, there isn't a whole lot to tell when it comes to this Blu-ray edition other than it looks great and carries the same features previous DVD and HD DVD editions included. I reviewed the HD DVD a while back, but there isn't a whole lot more to learn if you read it. If you are interested, just know I consider this one of the better at home titles as it never disappoints when I plug it in.

Three Days of the Condor
Here we have Robert Redford as a completely different kind of CIA agent from Spy Game. In short, he's nowhere near as cool — at least not at first. As Joe Turner, codename Condor, Redford reads books — a lot of books — and when he returns from his lunch break to find his entire office murdered he goes on the run, and the pieces of the puzzle are put together as the rest of the film plays out. I just posted a much more thorough review of the film right here. Hopefully you'll read it and give this one a chance. You won't regret it.

Bah, if you've seen it once then you've seen it as many times as you need to. This is a rental all the way.

My Bloody Valentine 3-D
I watched this one on DVD in 3-D mode and it actually wasn't all that bad. However, the green spectrum was a bit off and made for a halo effect at times. Had that not been the case I would whole-heartedly recommend buying this disc, since it is a lot of fun, but it is only worth watching in 3-D since that is what it was made for and the off-putting halo would be hard to watch on repeat viewings. I have not, however, watched the Blu-ray version yet and perhaps it will be an improvement.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop
I didn't necessarily like this film, but I think it got a pretty bad rap for all the wrong reasons. People made fun of this movie as if it was made to be some laugh-out-loud comedy for adult audiences, when it is nothing more than a live-action "Scooby-Doo" kind of film for children. I think even Observe and Report director Jody Hill took a shot at it — impressive. Of course, that doesn't mean I recommend you purchase it unless you have young ones in the house.

Paramount Catalog Blu-ray
Changing Lanes / Paycheck / The Machinist / Enemy at the Gates / Three Days of the Condor
I already mentioned Three Days of the Condor and of the other four I only watched Changing Lanes, since of the bunch I would say that is the only other one worth your dollar. Then again, I haven't watched Enemy at the Gates since its 2001 release, but I remember not necessarily liking it back then.

However, I would never recommend anyone buy Paycheck because it is just a bad movie and The Machinist is a film you should watch more than once only if you are contemplating suicide because it is one damn depressing film, but it is a well executed depressing film… I will give it that.

None of these titles come with any Blu-ray specific features outside of an occasional HD version of an old feature.

But remember, give Three Days of the Condor a chance, and if you haven't seen Changing Lanes give it a shot, and if you have then I assume you know what I am talking about.

Ugh, this movie is just plain awful. Thankfully this is the last time I will ever have to think about it.

Outlander
This was released back in January and made a whopping $166,003 at the box-office thanks to only getting 81 theaters at its widest release. The film stars James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Ron Perlman and John Hurt, but beyond that I don't know anything about it, so I will give you the official synopsis and be gone.

Outlander begins when a spacecraft crashes into the majestic fjords of ancient Norway and into the time of the Vikings. From the wreckage emerge two bitter enemies: a soldier from another world – Kainan – and a bloodthirsty creature known as the Moorwen. Man and monster both seeking revenge for violence committed against them. As the Moorwen ravages the Viking world, killing everything in its path, Kainan forms an unlikely alliance with the primitive but fierce warriors. Combining his advanced technology with ancient Iron Age weapons, the hero leads a desperate attempt to kill the monster – before it destroys them all.
