Light on new releases, heavy on new release dates

This week we don't have much to choose from when it comes to new titles, though the few that are offered are worth a once over. However, I have added A TON of new DVD and Blu-ray release dates to the database and at the bottom of the page you can explore all of those as per usual. My bet is you'll have a hard time not finding something you'll want to take home with you.

From Paris with Love
I really enjoyed this movie, but that isn't to say we're talking about masterful filmmaking. From Paris with Love is simply a whiz-bang actioner and it satisfies and does very little else. Some may look at that type of film as a must buy, others as a must rent. Or, perhaps a little ridiculous fun at the movies isn't your cup of tea and you'll pass on this title. I don't know, I had a good time with it.

Shutter Island
I didn't request a review copy of this one because I'm not so sure I'd be all that interested in watching it again. I know a lot of folks really got into Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, but I looked at it more like a mixed bag even though I did like it more than I expected to after reading the novel it's based on.

Caddyshack (Blu-ray)
I couldn't help but add this one to the list instead of the "Even More" pile. I'm not so sure it's a film worth owning on Blu-ray, but it is certainly a film worth owning.

  1. Shutter Island absolutely should be watched at least twice. On the second viewing, for obvious reasons, it feels like a completely different film and only then you realize how compelling it truly is. Get new details and clues, Hitchcock / noir homages, watch every actor in the role – its fantastic. Second best film of the year so far for me.

    • Winchester

Agreed – I think it will actually be even better to rewatch once you know the twist to do that very thing of checking it for clues and the details the first viewing doesn't give you.

But I can understand the opposite review. The friend I saw it in theatres with felt it was a one-watch film because as soon as she knew the twist she wouldn't enjoy it again.

      • It's a pity everybody who is of that opinion can't understand that the film doesn't rely completely on the twist. Hell, I don't even consider the revelation about Teddy an actual twist. The real twist is held in final line and the character's final decision, and let's face it, nobody could have ever predicted that.

Cant wait to buy Shutter Island on blu ray, it's the best movie for me so far in this rather disappointing year.

Shutter Island will be mine on DVD, great movie. The best of the year so far.
