This week's releases bring some seriously weak sauce

Revolutionary Road
I'm not exactly excited about any of the selections this week and as anxious as I was to see this movie last year, it ultimately disappointed me. The best way to describe this film would be to say it is just there. I got nothing from it. The book, however, I certainly recommend you read, although, like the film, it too is a bit of a downer, but at least it is brilliantly written.
Buy Revolutionary Road
Defiance
It is no wonder Paramount Home Video is offering a special deal if you buy Defiance and Revolutionary Road since both films are right there in the luke warm middle of the road. I will give Defiance credit for interesting me just slightly more than RR, but by the time I was supposed to review it last year I didn't even make the effort.
Buy Defiance
He's Just Not That Into You
To say I didn't review Defiance but to know I actually reviewed this mess is sort of shameful when you think about it. However, if I could steal (and slightly alter) the words of the great Kurtis Blow… those are the brakes. Oh, that means skip this one unless you have a nagging lady-friend that is easily entertained and you need some quiet time. This film is a mess.

Prison Break – The Complete Fourth Season
This is a show that never moved me beyond a passing interest. It really should have ended after only one season as the "break" had already happened and beyond that, what's the point of watching this group of mastermind morons run around causing trouble? However, that is how the show gets yah. If you stumble upon this and start watching I can imagine you quickly finishing an episode and with another one waiting in the wings pushing on to watch some more. But once you stop watching this show and take a break from it I have no idea why anyone would ever want to return… It is just too stupid for my taste.

Weeds – The Complete Fourth Season
I have to ask, any "Weeds" fans out there? Netflix has the first two season available for Instant Play and Lionsgate sent me review copies of season three and four, but I have yet to dig in since I don't want to waste my time when there are other things I could be doing. However, a couple of satisfied customers out there may be able to sway me toward watching this series. After all, I do have a mild crush on Mary-Louise Parker after her small role on "The West Wing".

Universal Blu-ray
Inside Man / Fletch / Bruce Almighty
Universal had to delay the release of Inside Man on Blu-ray because of an audio glitch, but things are resolved and the Spike Lee directed thriller is certainly the best of this triple BD header. I enjoy Bruce Almighty, but I haven't watched it for some time so I don't know if it is worth a purchase and if you are a Chevy Chase fan I guess you could buy Fletch in high-def, but is it really necessary?

Spring Breakdown
Here's an interesting little film of which I have been told by our box-office guru, Laremy Legel, is absolutely terrible. Even though it stars Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Parker Posey this flick made the festival circuit and is even still making the festival circuit (it's showing at the Seattle Film Festival this month) just as it hits DVD and Blu-ray. Laremy disliked this film enough for me to never watch it, you can make up your own mind based on that thought.

  1. Oh, "Weeds" is fantastic! Certainly worth watching and buying. I will admit that I think the show's gotten a bit weaker as it has gone along, but the show is still incredibly entertaining and I still watch every new episode (my family decided to pay the extra money for Showtime JUST so we could watch "Weeds" when it aired). They also throw in some very nifty twists from time to time, and that's always a plus. Oh yes, watch "Weeds." I highly doubt you'll be disappointed.

Wow, that Poehler/Posey/Dratch film looks horrible, I can tell by the box art.

Um…I liked "Revolutionary Road" a lot, much more than I thought I would, so that one's a possibility. What's the supposed "deal" if I buy "Defiance" w/ "Road"? Do I save some money or what?

Oh and I do have a nagging ladyfriend that saw "He's Just Not That Into You". Twice. Granted, I went neither of those times, and the second time was at the discount theater but still. Seems like a purchase for me (unfortunately).

Hey Brad, what? "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" is releasing on Blu-Ray today and you didn't mention it?!!!

Alright, gonna make a trip to Best Buy today for sure, even though I already have the 2-disc special edition DVD, I'm such a fanboy/whore that I'll pay for the upgrade.

    @Vince:

You know what, I'll stop commenting after this last…comment, but I've decided I'm going to watch that "Spring Breakdown" movie because after reading the IMDB review by "radigirl132" saying "You will find yourself laughing from the first moment through the very last scene…If you're in the mood to LOL then this is for you", I've decided that it is absolutely necessary viewing.

"If you're in the mood to LOL", are they serious? Are they even trying to mask the fact that it's a corporate wig?

@Vince: Yeah, I think you get $5. The stuff that was included with the screener copies I was sent was tossed in the trash so I can't tell you for sure, but it is on the outside of the boxes if you buy them in a store.

I have been long awaiting BraveHeart on Blu-Ray..is their any release date?

    Thanks

WEEDS IS EXCELLENT!!! Probably the second best show on Showtime closely behind Dexter. Defiantly check it out!!!

  8. I politely disagree with Laremy in regards to "Spring Breakdown." Is it art? No. Is it funny? Yes, most definitely. If anything, I'd would say it is on-par with other female-centric 'dumb' comedies like "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" or last year's Anna Farris vehicle "The House Bunny." I also think it got a highly unfair shake from Warner Bros, and the only reason this did not get a theatrical release is that it stars women instead of men.

I wrote a little bit about this on my Seattle International Film Festival Blog, comparing this one to Warner's whole-hearted support of the slightly similar (and admittedly a tad more funny" "The Hangover," which includes part of my interview with co-writer and star Rachel Dratch.
