This week is a breath of fresh air compared to recent weeks as we have more than just one title to talk about with Jason Bourne coming to Blu-ray and the film I deemed to be the best of 2008 coming home on DVD and Blu-ray. We also have the very good Roman Polanski doc and the old school Pink Panther Collection arrives with the original Pink Panther available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Yup, Woody Allen's romance was my favorite film of 2008 and Genius Products didn't even send me a screener. Boooooo! But I have already ordered the Blu-ray release from Amazon and expect it any day and I suggest you do the same. This is a great little film with two of the better performances of the year from Penelope Cruz and most notably Rebecca Hall. Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansson also bring their own special touch to another great Woody Allen script. Buy it!

The Bourne Trilogy
I already reviewed this box set and you can read that here, but here is a snippet from the review if you want the simple version:

If picture and sound aren't necessities for you then you are probably best left with your DVD releases considering this is going to be an expensive investment. If you haven't bought any of these titles yet and were looking at this one to be where you start then I definitely urge you to pick it up, it doesn’t get much better.

The set is listed at $64.99 at Amazon, which isn't necessarily that expensive when it comes to a Blu-ray set and since these three titles aren't available individually on Blu-ray this may be the only option for HD Bourne for the time being. Considering a lot of Blu-ray titles are listed around $25 and up at Amazon getting these for $21.63 each is a mild bargain… mild.

Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired
This is a title I don't necessarily think you should buy, which is something regular readers already know about me when it comes to documentaries since I don't think they are worth watching more than once, but it is definitely a doc you will want to see if you know anything whatsoever about Roman Polanski and his unlawful sexual encounter with a 13-year-old oh-so-many-years ago. My theatrical review of the film can be found here and I will tell you it is a bit of an eye opener.

The Pink Panther (Collector's Edition)
The real story here is the fact the original 1964 Pink Panther is coming to Blu-ray while the rest of the Panther flicks can either be bought in the new "Pink Panther Film Collection" or individually as you can buy The Pink Panther on DVD or Blu-ray along with the rest of the following titles on DVD: A Shot in the Dark, Curse of the Pink Panther, Son of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Trail of the Pink Panther, Revenge of the Pink Panther and Pink Panther and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection. The Buy Now link takes you to Amazon with a look at all 10 options.

When it comes to these films I am not necessarily a huge fan, but I think Peter Sellers is always fun to watch. I probably wouldn't rush out to buy any of these titles since a Netflix rental would probably satisfy me, but if you are a big fan it wouldn't hurt to have the complete collection.

Zodiac (Director's Cut)
I couldn't bring myself to review this film again since I already reviewed it theatrically, on single disc DVD and then again on HD DVD. Considering the Blu-ray features are exactly the same as the HD DVD you could go ahead and read that review and make your decision. I like this movie and I think it is definitely worth owning, but it is a slow and methodical kind of thriller and certainly not for everyone.

Pride and Glory
Ugh, this film has one of the worst endings from 2008. Here's a snippet from my theatrical review:

Seriously, a fist fight in a bar? That’s the dramatic climax you have for me? Pride and Glory is a film that was, at the very least, acceptable for 105 minutes of its 125 minute running time, but it offers up one of the most absurd climaxes imaginable as it seems the screenwriters just ran out of ideas and said, "Forget it, let's just solve it all right here and right now." That they do as this flick co-written and directed by Gavin O'Connor with the writing help of Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces and Narc) is certainly able to step out of the nasty shadow looming from last year’s dreadful corrupt cop drama We Own the Night, but following the final 20 minutes it may actually end up lower on the pile.

I can't say much more than that.

Groundhog Day
I actually just watched this a few days ago and noticed recent Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon has a comical little part as one of the inhabitants of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Can you remember which character without cheating? If not, this is a flick worth considering for a purchase and you can find him for yourself.

The Lucky Ones
I did not enjoy this film about three soldiers on leave from the war in Iraq who get stuck together traveling across the country. To say this was a disappointing follow-up to The Illusionist for director Neil Burger would be an understatement.

Lakeview Terrace
I did not like Lakeview Terrace but I am glad I saw it and I am glad I read Roger Ebert's review of it as he gave it a glowing review as a result of making up virtually a completely different film than what was seen on screen. Here's a sample of his review:

But take a step back. What if all the races were switched? If the neighbor were white, the husband next door black, his wife white? Same script. It would be the story of a sociopathic white racist. It might be interesting, but it would have trouble getting made. The casting of Jackson as the neighbor creates a presumption of innocence that some will hold on to longer than the story justifies. Don't think for a moment that LaBute doesn't know audience members will be thinking about that switch of identities. He wants us to. All of his films feature nasty people who challenge nasty thoughts or fears within ourselves. Is this movie racist for making the villain black or would it be equally racist by making the villain white? Well? What's your answer?

I did not connect to the movie on any level, let alone on the level Roger did, but it may be worth a watch just to form your own opinion and give his review a read.

RocknRolla
It feels as if I just saw RocknRolla. I received the Blu-ray of this film about two weeks ago and it almost felt as if I had received something illegally. I mean, I had just seen the movie and reviewed it on October 31, 2008. Flash forward less than three months later and the film is available to own on Blu-ray. Tell me again why anyone would bother seeing some of these films in theaters? RocknRolla is actually a film I quite enjoyed, but I have a feeling by tossing it aside as if it were a bargain bin feature pretty much squashes the chance of the film trilogy Guy Ritchie intended. Too bad.
Buy RocknRolla
The Rocker
I have no idea why I included this in the featured section. Is anyone with half a brain going to buy this when there are so many better movies to buy? However, I had made the graphic you see to the left and it felt a waste not to use it.
Buy The Rocker
Fireproof
Back in early October the movie world was abuzz as the Christian themed Kirk Cameron starrer Fireproof, which was made on a $500,000 budget, made $6.8 million in its opening weekend at the box office. I don't know anyone that has seen it, but it is currently the #1 seller this week at Amazon ahead of Bourne on Blu-ray and Vicky Cristina Barcelona with the Faith-Based Three-Pack pulling in at #4 which includes Fireproof, Flywheel and Facing Giants. Go figure, there is an audience for everything.

Been looking for Michael Sheen in Groundhog Day and was wondering if you meant Michael Shannon?

  2. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@David: Yup, late night writing this one and just didn't catch that error. Definitely Shannon. Sorry. :)

  3. Jonathan

While there is an audience for everything, don't assume Fireproof is garbage because of the budget. It's actually a very well told story with some genuinely funny and touching moments.

  4. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@Jonathan: Who said anything about it being garbage? The point is that there is a large Christian audience out there and it has certainly supported this film.

Working at a video store I get 5 free rentals a week before they come out. I recently saw the movie college because there was nothing else to rent to grab it. Have any of you seen college? In my opinion it is one of the worst films I have EVER seen. Im not exagerating on the EVER part either. I spent at least an hour thinking about it and I do believe it may be one of the worst films I have EVER seen haha. I would elaborate on my opinion but theres no need for risking carpel tunnel to talk about that movie. Anyone seen it?
