This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: January 13, 2009

| In the next couple days I will be doing one complete article for the first five releases from Paramount Home Entertainment for their Centennial Collection, which has certainly been pro Audrey Hepburn up to this point with four of the first five films released starring the '50s and '60s beauty (and boy was she beautiful). This week we have Breakfast at Tiffany's and Funny Face and I can only comment on Tiffany's as I have not seen Funny Face yet, but it is playing in the background as I type. Personally I am not much of a fan of Tiffany's even though it is considered to be such a classic. This isn't to say I dislike it as much as I just can't quite figure it out. Is it a comedy? Is it cute? Is it a romance? Is it a drama? Is it a story about a gold-digging dimwitted runaway that somehow manages to convince George Peppard he loves her despite all her flaws? More on this film in the complete commentary. The disc includes a commentary with producer Richard Shepherd as well as a fleet of featurettes on disc two, one of which is called "Mr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective". I definitely will watch that one before my longer article. Funny Face is a musical starring Hepburn with Fred Astaire and doesn't come with a commentary, but does come with a complete list of special features on disc two. Again, more on these soon… | |

Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach | |

| Considering Seann William Scott just turned in a fun performance in Role Models, which was liked a lot it tells me this flick must be pretty bad for Sony to give up on a theatrical release and go straight to DVD. Hell, they are releasing Paul Blart: Mall Cop for cryin' out loud. | |

| We expect to have a Blu-ray review of this one up soon (not by me so I can't tell you when for sure), but I am anxious to see how it turns out. This one could be a slasher that may be able to offer up a good time or it could be the travesty Fox refused to screen for critics in 2008. Stay tuned… | |

My Best Friend's Girl | |

| Lionsgate sent me this one, but I didn't have the heart to hand it off to another reviewer as it is one I won't ever watch. Then again, it does star the People's Choice award winner for Best Actress of 2008 in Kate Hudson. I am not sure what that says about the "people" considering her two 2008 films were Fools Gold and this one followed by Bride Wars last week, but it isn't inspiring. | |

| I just received a Blu-ray review copy of this one a day ago so I haven't had a chance to watch it just yet, but I recommend all of you give this one a watch. It isn't a shoot 'em up western as much as it is a slow character driven piece. People do get shot, but the dialogue and characters on screen are the draw here. The disc includes a commentary with Ed Harris and his co-screenwriter Robert Knott, which I certainly plan on checking out, with some deleted scenes and four featurettes. | |

Brideshead Revisited | |

| This flick was released back in July 2008 to pretty good reviews, but it never generated a whole lot of buzz. Perhaps a solid rental? The film is based on Evelyn Waugh’s acclaimed novel and follows Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), and then his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell,). The rise and fall of Charles' infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England between the wars. Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson co-stars as Lady Marchmain. | |
