Open your wallets, there's a lot to buy this week

This is one of those weeks I hope you are thankful you didn't waste your money on unwanted and unnecessary DVD and Blu-ray purchases, seeing how there's upwards of five films I would suggest many of you pick up. It's a lot, but it's the reason you have to be selective when considering your purchases. Let's get into it, and be sure to check out the newly added titles at the end, I am positive there will be at least one title to satisfy your interest, which one will it be though? Share in the comments if you are moved to do so…

Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
I seem to talk about this movie all the time and I just gushed on and on about it in my just posted review of Criterion's brand new Blu-ray release. I don't think there is much more to say.
Buy Federico Fellini's 8 1/2
In the Loop
I hope all of you buy a copy of this film and I hope all of you laugh your ass off. I would have written up a proper DVD review, but it doesn't contain anything worth mentioning other than the film, which I have covered at length including adding it to my list of top ten films of 2009 and writing an A+ review. I think I have done my duty here.
Buy In the Loop
The Hurt Locker
A great film, but the DVD seems to be lacking. The featurette is pretty good, but other than that all we get is a commentary with Bigelow and Boal. Perhaps it's simply because I feel as if I have covered the hell out of this movie that none of this really seems new to me, but this is a DVD worth the purchase for the film alone, especially on Blu-ray.
Buy The Hurt Locker
The Brothers Bloom
For some reason I thought this had already been released, but I had to quickly add it to my calendar and get it in as one of 2009's forgotten films makes its way to shelves today. You may want to give this one a rent before buying seeing how it is certainly a film for particular tastes, but I bet it will grow on folks the more they watch it.
Buy The Brothers Bloom
Moon
While I seem to be in the minority by not falling head over heels for this film, it certainly is a film worth checking out, if for no other reason than to be able to say you've seen it and have an opinion on it. You can read my theatrical review if you need more of my opinion.
Buy Moon
The Burning Plain
I actually enjoyed this film despite how most of director Guillermo Arriaga's unnecessary non-linear story manipulation got in the way. Had this film been told in a linear fashion I think more people would have championed it, but instead it just felt like a gimmick getting in the way. It also was the source of one of the funniest PR stunts I have witnessed as I received an email encouraging me to promote the fact Charlize Theron got naked in it. Of course, I am doing exactly what that press release wanted me to do by mentioning it here, but it was just so silly I couldn't go on forever without mentioning it. The things people will do to sell their stuff. For an indie film such as this to fall back on the "It's got boobs!" PR tactic is quite sad.
Buy The Burning Plain
Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself
I have never been invited to screen a Tyler Perry movie (no, Precious does not count) and as such I have never seen a Tyler Perry movie, a trend I assume will last my lifetime.
Buy Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself
Fame (Extended Dance Edition)
Not a good movie, skip it.

Halloween II
Oh man, an unrated director's cut! You mean this is the movie that was too scary and gory and violent for us to see in theaters? From the mind of the brilliant Rob Zombie? I'll pass.
Buy Halloween II
Post Grad
The 9% RottenTomatoes rating for this one seems a bit daunting.
Buy Post Grad
The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season
"The Simpsons" are 20-years-old. I don't know if that surprises me more or the fact people are still watching "The Simpsons".

"Thanks for 20 wonderful years. Now stay tuned for three Seth MacFarlane shows."

The Brothers Bloom was already out. I bought it from my local movie store with away we go when it came out. And I live in the country in the middle of kentucky where it's hard to find indie movies. But i also bought Tokyo! here last year and some places online say it's not even out yet.

  3. I think "The Brothers Bloom" was released as a rental exclusive at Blockbuster and such, but not available anywhere else until now. At least that was my understanding.

  4. The Jackal

@Brad Brevet: I agree with your opinion of Moon. While I thought it was a very well-done, low-budget thriller, I wasn't blown away or anything. As to 8 1/2, I'm gonna hold on to my original Criterion DVD edition for now.

Again, I've yet to understand people's/critic's fascination with The Hurt Locker? It was a finely crafted film. It was a great Iraqi War Film, but it was not a classic. The Iraqi War genre hasn't produced a wealth of good films, so I guess anytime one is actually good, people go crazy for it. Personally, I think In The Valley of Elah and Rendition were far superior films to cover the current war on terror.

  5. Bri-Man

The Hurt Locker, The Brothers Bloom, Moon, and 8 and 1/2 out on Blu-Ray today. Well there goes all my money. Also looking forward to checking out In The Loop when its not a long wait on netflix.

Does anyone else see the truly big news here?

Yes indeed, "The African Queen" is finally getting a DVD release. "Oh, do you mean Blu-ray?" you say. Nope, I mean DVD. It is one of those few well-known movies that, head-scratchingly, has never made its way to DVD. I believe it was the only movie on the AFI's Top 100 that wasn't on DVD. Until now. I suggest you all check it out, because it's a solid movie (which I watched on VHS, by the way, at my grandparent's house a few years back).

    @The Pork Chop Express:

I agree. I saw "Bloom" about 3 weeks ago after renting it at a Redbox. Apparently now it's for sale. Maybe I'll pick it up- I really enjoyed that film. Almost reminded me of another great(er) film, "In Bruges", although this one was more slick and silly.

Brad, gotta say I strongly disagree with your thoughts on MOON. Its an amazing film and Rockwell's performance is just astonishing. Honestly I don't understand why he didn't even get a sniff by the oscar voters, its a shame.
