Slim pickings this week

The September Issue
I don't read Vogue and know very little about the fashion world, but I still find it incredibly interesting and while The September Issue doesn't necessarily explore the fashion world to any great extent or even go all that deep into the yearly bible of the industry, it is still wildly fascinating and this DVD is filled with bonuses for those that want more than the 88 minutes R.J. Cutler's doc offers.

In fact it comes with an audio commentary with Cutler and a featurette of behind-the-scenes photos. But the big draw will be the group of deleted scenes on the first disc followed by over an hour of additional footage on the second disc. As the sticker says on the box art to the left, this thing has over 90 minutes of additional footage. Personally it was a bit too much and in all honesty the film and commentary were enough, but the even more fascinated target audience should eat this stuff up. Next we need a much harder hitting documentary solely on Anna Wintour. Now that would be a treat.

The Damned United
In terms of fictional narratives this is the best you're going to get this week. The Damned United is highly entertaining film, and has earned a 93% rating at RottenTomatoes and I gave it a B+ in my October 2009 review. Give it a watch, it's well worth it.

Flame and Citron
I never got a chance to see this film, but I have heard some good things. It carries an 86% rating at RottenTomatoes and I have included the trailer directly below. Furthermore, it's available on Netflix Instant Play, which gives you little reason to not check it out. (unless you don't have Netflix, which seems simple enough to remedy).

Dead Snow
Described as a "Nazi Zombie Movie", I am upset I have not yet seen this one. With 62 reviews counted, it too has a "fresh" rating of 66% at RottenTomatoes and is also available on Netflix Instant Play. Check out the trailer below and see what you think.

The Box
I have not yet gotten to watch my Blu-ray copy of The Box yet, but the features look intriguing for a film I liked more than most, but still wonder if I will like it the second time around. The features sound interesting enough, with a commentary with writer/director Richard Kelly as well as an interview with author Richard Matheson who penned the short story the film is based on. This isn't a perfect film, but you're watching it more for the ideas it presents than anything else and I am still interested in giving it another chance to see if it belongs on my shelf or in the scrap pile.

The Informant!
I tried to watch it again and I bounced between the commentary and the film and realized once was enough. I wondered how a second screening of this one would go and I just couldn't get into it.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
Just a plain and simple terrible movie. This was an obvious cash grab as Universal hoped more for a franchise of films than concentrating on making one good film from the start. Seeing how this one flopped I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the sequel.

Everybody's Fine
Here's a decent little film, but I wouldn't make any major effort to see it.

Sorority Row
Oddly enough, Summit didn't do much to make people aware this was hitting DVD and Blu-ray this weekend. Looking at a few of the DVD specific websites, they don't even mention it. RopeofSilicon has some ads running for it, but other than that I haven't even seen a TV trailer. I never caught it in theaters, but may try to find the time to watch it at home. Then again, my Netflix regular queue and Instant queue total 880 films in waiting so it may be a while before I get to Sorority Row.

  1. District 13: Ultimatum is coming out in two months time, can't wait!

I'm kinda interested in "Dead Snow", but considering it's a zombie movie, I should be more excited for it.

Really didn't like "The Informant", and the rest of the line-up this week looks horrendous.

I just saw "Vampire" and it was not very good. And what a waste of a role by Ken Watanabe.
