This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: December 15, 2009
Tarantino, Mel Brooks, 'The Hangover'... It's a good day...
Inglourious Basterds | |
| I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition, which you can read right here, but if you're looking for the short version… Buy this one right now. My recommendation is Blu-ray. | |
The Mel Brooks Collection [Blu-ray]
| I almost made this the first previewed release, but at $92.99 I know it isn't exactly something people are going to be rushing out to buy as it takes a little more thought before handing over that kind of money. However, considering the set comes with nine of Mel Brooks's films on beautiful Blu-ray transfers that means you are getting each at just over $10. That's a pretty good deal. The titles included in the set are Twelve Chairs, Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World – Part I, To Be or Not To Be, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. On top of that there are seven featurettes plus six all-new featurettes exclusive to Blu-ray. It also comes well-packaged in a cardboard case along with a 119-page book. It won't fit on your shelf next to the rest of your Blu-rays but it will display nicely wherever you put it. I have already watched all of the films included in the set and many of the features and will have a review up very soon (sorry, it's a lot to watch), but I can tell you now if you are a fan of Brooks this is the set to purchase. Each film looks fantastic (although not all have been entirely overhauled) and outside of The Producers you pretty much are looking at the Brooks lot. If you already picked up Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs on Blu-ray it may not be as appealing, but if you haven't or if you know someone that would like this as a gift it is a wonderful buy. | |
The Hangover | |
| I also just reviewed this Blu-ray title and must say I was sad to see The Hangover didn't hold up to the "A-" I gave it while watching it theatrically. However, considering we are talking about a studio released comedy filled with sight gags and sex jokes this film is still better than most. You can get my full review right here. | |
G-Force | |
| I never got around to watching this Blu-ray, but I intend to. I haven't heard good things, but I want to see for myself. | |
Taking Woodstock | |
| This is actually a pretty good film with one of the better performances of the year from Liev Schreiber. I wouldn't say it's worthy of a purchase, but definitely worth renting. My theatrical review can be read right here. | |
The Tudors: The Complete Third Season
| I must say, I love, love, loved the first season of this show, but I couldn't get through the first three episodes of the second season and didn't even bother requesting a review copy of the third. It just got too damned repetitive. | |

Finally, the Toy Stories are coming out on Blu-Ray. I can't wait.
RT is reporting that Boogie Nights comes out on BluRay this week…
How come Carriers is already available at my Blockbuster? It says release date Dec. 29 but I saw it on the shelves last night.
The Goods also is at my Blockbuster, around 3 weeks ago.
I'm from Montreal, I didn't think movies had different release dates in the U.S. and Canada? Usually it's the same day for North America in general no?
@Roger: Both were released as rental only and will now be made available for purchase.
