An absolute deluge of decent movies

I must say, for as many movies that are being released today It's staggering to realize the best and most interesting of the bunch are probably the two documentaries. Sure, Despicable Me was enjoyable, but do you really need to see it again? I also know a lot of people enjoyed The Town, so perhaps that's the one narrative exception, but outside of a catalog title or two this is a weird week for new releases. I see a lot of films I enjoyed this year listed below, but I'm not rushing out to add any of them to my collection.

Despicable Me
A solid animated feature, but having only seen it once I can't say if it's worth a purchase or just a one-time viewing. Oddly enough this looks like it's Universal's only shot at an Oscar this year and it will unfortunately be left off the Best Animated list due to the Oscars only going with three animated nominees this year instead of five.
Buy Despicable Me
The Town
The fact this film is generating Best Picture buzz is baffling to me. It's an okay movie, but it just didn't hit me where it counts. It's a rather forgettable movie.
Buy The Town
The Other Guys
This was a solid comedy and showed Kevin Smith what it means to make a solid homage to classic '80s cop dramas. It has its share of speed bumps along the way, but overall it was a very enjoyable comedy.
Buy The Other Guys
Exit Through the Gift Shop
A solid documentary and I'm excited to watch it again if I can only find the time. I've got the DVD here and Oscilloscope has once again put together a nice package as they do with all of their releases including a film about the "art" of Banksy I'm interested in checking out.

True Grit
I may have to buy this one. I wouldn't mind owning the entire John Wayne collection on Blu-ray as a matter of fact. The guy quite simply made solid and entertaining features.
Buy True Grit
The A-Team
I had fun with this one in the theater, but not sure how necessary it is to buy it.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
This just arrived today and I am really interested in watching it. I never got to see it during its theatrical run, but I have heard nothing but positive comments. It's also available on Blu-ray, but I'm not quite sure why that would be necessary.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
Meh, the only really good thing I can say about this film is it had some of the best 3D I've seen. On the other hand it has that nightmare of a song by Owl City. No thanks.

Micmacs
This is somewhere between Jeunet's Amelie and Delicatassen. Personally I love Amelie and am not a big fan of Delicatassen and have no desire to watch this film again.
Buy Micmacs
Nanny McPhee Returns
I have both this film and the original on Blu-ray and have yet to watch either, though I have heard they are both very enjoyable films. Oh well, maybe one of these days.
Buy Nanny McPhee Returns
Mother and Child
Good movie and perhaps some of the best directing of 2010 although I can't say it's a film I feel I need to return to. It's rather bleak and the ending is its major downfall, but this film really deserves more respect.
Buy Mother and Child
Cyrus
The first time I watched it I laughed and laughed. The second time I watched it I almost felt ashamed for laughing. This isn't a comedy, it's a tragedy and to laugh at it is to laugh at the misfortune of another. The second viewing turned me off entirely.

Hard Boiled (Blu-ray)
A solid actioner from John Woo, but this Blu-ray is rather lacking. It doesn't have the pop I'd hoped for and the picture is far from pristine. It's still probably the best you're going to get in the States and for that reason alone if you don't own it it may be time to pick it up, but those that already have a copy they're happy with, you may want to hold off on upgrading.

I absoleutly fell in love with Despicable Me. In my opinion, it's both extremely heartfelt, and extremely funny at the same time, and they blend almost seamlessly together.

The A-Team was a BLAST! One of my favorite popcorn movies of 2010. While I quite enjoyed Knight and Day, I have to say that A-Team was more fun. I didn't find Knight and Day to be that funny, although I enjoyed it as a summer popcorn action film. The A-Team, however, I did find to have some very funny moments.

The Other Guys was OK. The first half was actually pretty funny, but the other half got to crazy and tried to hard to become an action movie. To be honest, I enjoyed the comedy more than the action.

I wouldn't mind seeing True Grit again, just to have a frame of reference when the Coen brothers' remake comes out.
That was one of the Duke's greatest performances of his career. Jeff Bridges will have to put on quite a show to top it, in my opinion.
