They're Rebooting 'Cliffhanger', Don't Act Surprised

What, you didn't have this one on the list?

I have been covering movie news on RopeofSilicon.com since 2003, which means I have done my fair share of belly-aching whenever a new remake is announced and it gets tiring, not to mention boring for you to read. But what else can you do when you read there is a plan to, not remake, but to reboot Cliffhanger, the Sylvester Stallone 1993 actioner set in the Colorado Rockies? Perhaps it wouldn't sound so silly if the Variety article didn't have Original Films' Neal Moritz saying, "Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we're going to do the same with Cliffhanger."

What does that even mean? "Star Trek" has a 40+ year mythology. Cliffhanger has a movie in 1993. Where is the comparison?

Then the Variety article says that unlike the original, where Italy stood in for the Colorado Rockies, the new redo looks set to feature multiple cliff-face locations. Is that supposed to get me excited? Oh boy, instead of trouble on one mountain there will be trouble on several mountains!

As of now there is no screenwriter attached but the plan is to shoot the film some time in 2010.

Do with this news what you will, but be sure you watch the insanely over dramatic trailer from the first film, which I embedded in this post.

Now that's good news even with some one like Neal Moritz (XXX/Fast&Furios) pulling the strings. As long as they not trying to include the whole X games circus or such shit. Instead this could be TAKEN on a rock, with an grumpy (not to young) mountain guide giving some bad guy-show-offs a hard time. Preferable in a strong ratetd-r kind of way.

Oddly enough I didn't see that coming.

C'mon. That trailer was fu%$!ng epic. That song was conceived for that trailer alone. That MOVIE was conveived for that trailer alone. That was the embodiment of the very soul of 90's action trailers. It alone is the justification for a remake, if not a trilogy. :D

im not hating on this particular movie, but did all major production studios, say, drop everything you got, we are going to reboot every single movie made before 2005? who is to blame? christopher nolan and christian bale, for inspiring the uninspired to be anymore lazy, where is the creativity and innovation in hollywood these days, everything is a comic book, novel adaptation or a reboot of a mildly popular movie of the past decades???

  5. This is a HUGE mistake! CLIFFHANGER was Sly's 'comeback' film & did him A LOT of good!
It was bad enough & in poor taste when Jim Carrey copied the beginning of CLIFFHANGER for HIS film! You can't make Sly's film better without him! And it doesn't need to be re-made! I won't be "hanging on" in anticipation for this one! No Sly, no go!
