There's a Writer for That New 'Nightmare on Elm Street'

Who is this fella and should we be excited for Freddy's return?

Michael Bay recently told Entertainment Weekly they were still working on bringing the remake version of Nightmare on Elm Street together and it seems there is some movement as New Line has hirted Wesley Strick to pen the relaunch as Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund in all its previous incarnations), a serial child killer murdered who returns with a burned face and razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams will be brought back to "life".

The new project will keep the high school setting and delve deeper in the psychology of nightmares and Krueger himself. The plan is to have a dark tone. The company hopes to have the movie ready for the 25th anniversary of the original.

The move to create a "dark tone" is obviously a comment on how overly comical the slew of sequels became as the Nightmare films became more and more campy as time went on. The first Nightmare flick was actually a great piece of original horror, but it is hard to call its sequels anything special. Hopefully the sequel will be able to bring back Freddy in a way that can satisfy the fans and not become too overly teen focused.

As for this Strick fella, well, he actually penned the shooting script for De Niro's Cape Fear, the Val Kilmer starrer The Saint, co-wrote Arachnophobia, co-wrote Jack Nicholson's Wolf and was unfortunately part of the abortion that was 2005's Doom. So, he has some work under his belt and is not entirely a lost cause even is it seems he hasn't done a whole lot of work recently.
