'The Rum Diary' Poster Reminds Me to 'Eat, Pray, Love'
Not exactly original
The poster for Johnny Depp's upcoming film, The Rum Diary has debuted and it really doesn't appear FilmDistrict is trying too hard with this one just yet. The poster is essentially the same idea as the Eat, Pray, Love poster you see to the right only tiny rum bottles make up the design rather than pasta and flowers.
The film is set to hit theaters on October 28 and is an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's debut novel and stars Depp as roaming journalist Paul Kemp. Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancee of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.
The film also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rispoli and Richard Jenkins. Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I) directs.
The first trailer appeared a few weeks back so if you haven't caught that click here to head on over after checking out the poster directly below.

I kind of love it.
Had no idea about that Eat, Pray, Love poster. Still, I like The Rum Diary more if for the sentences inbetween the rum bottles.
I like this teaser poster… and I'm hoping the final poster will be better than just floating heads… it would be cool if they could create one that would be complimentary to the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas poster… Though more alcohol induced imagery rather than Acid induced… maybe something that appears as if it were being seen through the bottom of an empty bottle. And this teaser might not be that original… but really, how many posters are these days? I really wish we could get back to the days when posters were works of art… Mondo always does awesome work with their special commisioned posters… I think studios/marketing departments should take note of that…
