Not as limited as some are speculating

I am posting this only because there seems to be some misinformation running around as to how many markets John Hillcoat's The Road will be hitting on November 25 as it finally makes its long-awaited theatrical debut.

Recent rumors stated its wide release was whittled down to theaters in only New York and Los Angeles so I did a quick check and it appears it's going to be hitting 31 markets on November 25. Weinstein has also confirmed an additional roll out, but haven't confirmed markets. So I can't tell you where the film will go from here.

Below is the list I was given directly from Weinstein.

  1. Atlanta
  2. Austin
  3. Baltimore
  4. Boston
  5. Chicago
  6. Dallas-Ft. Worth
  7. Denver
  8. Detroit
  9. Erie
  10. Houston
  11. Kansas City
  12. Los Angeles
  13. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
  14. Minneapolis-St. Paul
  15. New York
  16. Oklahoma City
  17. Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne
  18. Palm Springs
  19. Philadelphia
  20. Phoenix
  21. Pittsburgh
  22. Portland, OR
  23. Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto
  24. San Antonio
  25. San Diego
  26. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
  27. Santa Barbara-San Marcos-San Luis Obispo
  28. Seattle-Tacoma
  29. St. Louis
  30. Tampa -St. Petersburg – Sarasota
  31. Washington, DC

Is that a US only list or a North American list with no love for the north?

  2. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@GregM: It's a US only list. I don't have information on other areas. Sorry.

  3. i hope it goes wide the book was great and the movie looks excellent

  4. And TWC has had a Website up for the movie for the last two months. They could have announced the cities on the site themselves. Can't say I saw any mention of this "semi-limited" roll-out on their site earlier today. But, thanks for posting this useful information!

  5. I quote David Letterman when I say, "And I just pray that your city has been selected."

@GregM: As you probably know, limited releases always hit Toronto or Montreal first. Here in Ottawa, we usually get a film in question quite earlier than one would expect. I still remember when we had The Illusionist when it was playing in 20-something theatres.

I say, just GIVE US THE DAMN MOVIE ALREADY!

  6. Dan Tralder

    Is an expansion expected?

  7. Scott

I know it will open even wider than that. It's opening in Milwaukee on the 25th.

  8. Brad Brevet (Post Author)

@Scott: If you have a source for that please pass it on, because this is the official list from Weinstein Co. directly, which was passed on to me only minutes before posting.

  9. George

    @Brad Brevet: @Brad Brevet:

It's opening in Stamford, CT which also isn't on the list….unless that's considered the NY market. My source is that I already bought my ticket….I hope they aren't mistaken in thinking they are getting a print.

  10. Dan Tralder

Yeah, I thouht that Nov 25 was a wide release for The Road

  11. Cuchillo

    Yes San Antonio!!!

  12. GregM

@Brad Brevet: Don't be sorry, I was just curious when I saw Eire but not Toronto (I don't mean to pick on Eire I just happen to know its population). Thanks for the update though.
@Eli: You're probably right. Cineplex has the release date listed as the Friday (27th) but no theatre/city details.

  13. Jared

Has it listed as releasing at our art house theatre here in salt lake city, Utah as well. I called them and confirmed it. Hopefully that's not a screw up on their part. I'm really looking forward to this.

  14. Scott

@Brad Brevet: Here's the link to the theatre's website that has The Road listed for the 25th:

@George and @Scott: Interesting stuff, all I can go by is what I've been told and I have even heard back from Weinstein telling me it is "NOT opening in Milwaukee & Stamford. Regardless of the movie tickets online," and yes, I have even seen the presale tickets for The Road in Stamford at MovieTickets.com.

I know this release change is fairly recent so maybe word hasn't found it's way everywhere, but I am only telling you guys what the studio is telling me.

  16. George

Just because I had nothing else to do I rang up my local (danbury CT) AMC chain theater and they claim they are getting it on the 25th….they even put me on hold to "double check". The girl even told me there might be a midnight showing on Tuesday (maybe she thought I was asking about twilight). Gotta hand it to the Weinstein company this is officially the most frustrating and confusing movie release i've ever been subject to. If we hadn't already been waiting a year and it wasn't my favorite book i'd be fine with waiting for dvd or a wider release….this is just aggravating.

  17. @George:

So you're describing TWC's behavior for the last few years. It's not surprising they've continue to botch the marketing and distribution of this movie so utterly.

  18. I can't believe some people won't see it because of the bleak nature of the premise.
If you really think about it, it's more than that. It's about the strength of spirit in the wake of a bad situation. That should give people reason to see it. The will to persevere in a unfathomable situation.

I know that it will play in NYC but so far it is only showing one theater – the Landmark Sunshine in Manhattan. It was supposed to play in the outer boroughs too but it was pulled from my local arthouse. I am very disappointed. I called TWC and they said it would come to the outerboroughs but not until sometime in December. To do this a week in before the film's release is ridiculous.

  20. Shadow 13

Does anyone know for sure that Atlanta is going to show the movie for sure? Because I can't find any theater with it listed.

  21. COrey Stringer

Does anyone have any information on when its going to open in Kentucky? Can anyone find out for me and email it to me or whatever. Ive waited on this thing for two years and im so fed up with the way TWC has treated this film! The book touched my heart on so many levels and John Hillcoat is amazing and deserves to be known for his work. Please can some one find this out for me..it would be amazing if anyone could.

  22. Evangeline

It's not playing in Louisiana when part of the movie was filmed in New Orleans! I love Cormac McCarthy and The Road was a stellar creation. I was so looking forward to seeing it and it was even listed at our local theatre, but then….gone. Is there any way to pressure Weinstein Co. to make a broader release?

  23. Lydia

To second the above post, any word on a wider release? I'm hoping for Indianapolis but I'd take Louisville! Or Bloomington, IN, where I taught the novel this semester and would love to do something with the movie before the term's up. :)

  24. benjamin

no love for Indianapolis : (

  25. Gabriel

Well…guess I'm driving 4 hours through the snow to cozy ol' Detroit to watch this one. Swell. What's so hard about handing out more copies of the film? Are they all hand carved into gold by one old man or something? Christ.

  26. bernie

I'm going to end up torrenting this film because it isn't playing anywhere in my state, or at least nowhere within four hours of me. I loved the book and was excited for the movie but now I'm just disappointed.

And I don't know if I'll even buy the DVD when it comes out because this is so stupid.

To Weinstein: WE JUST WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY! Why won't you let us?
