The Pictures from 'Thor' Look Gaga Goofy

COMMENTS

Is this supposed to look like a joke?

That's Lady Gaga on the left with the dogs… Sorry for the confusion

The first photo from Thor featured an obscure shot of Chris Hemsworth as the title character. There really wasn't much to judge. He looks like he has one of those Batman-like suits on, only his cape is red with a massive silver bolt holding it onto his giant wing-like shoulder pads. Sure, it looks like something Lady Gaga would wear while walking her dogs, but whatever. Lady Gaga would probably wear this suit to walk her dogs.

Then came the full on Thor concept art, which obviously looks a lot like the final suit with a CG cape and his hammer of the Gods, looking like he was going to put in a hard day of work on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" or "Holmes on Homes." Suffice to say, it just looks silly, but…

…it gets even worse. Just what the hell is this? Is this just three guys playing dress up and we're supposed to take it seriously because Anthony Hopkins is front and center? Sorry, but this looks goofy as hell. Where are they? A marble sewer system? I'm sure someone familiar with the comic book knows exactly what's going on here, but man-oh-man, if this is the best they can do with the first batch of official photos it isn't inspiring any kind of confidence. By the way, is that Charlie's Golden Ticket over Anthony's eye?

Photo: Paramount Pictures via "The Los Angeles Times"

Today the above image debuted on SlashFilm after being scanned out of the "Los Angeles Times" and according to their write-up this is the Hall of Asgard, featuring a kneeling Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Asgardians Fandral the Dashing (Josh Dallas), Hogun the Grim (Tadanobu Asano) and Frigga (Rene Russo); and Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) both sporting ceremonial helmets. Also, I understand the big ol' birds up there to be Odin's ravens named Huginn and Muninn, sort of his carrier pigeons of some sort.

While not as bad as the full photo of Hopkins and clan (most likely because it's a wide shot) this isn't improving things by any stretch. This film just doesn't look very good…

Perhaps director Kenneth Branagh was going for the old school look Superman had and is mixing the idea of new-fangled costumes and capes with low rent sets, but I would think cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos would at least make it look good, but based on the fact his most prominent feature to date is Mamma Mia! perhaps that seems like expecting too much.

I just wonder, if Thor is a bust when it hits theaters on May 6, 2011 what does that do for Paramount's plans for The Avengers (May 4, 2012)? Same for The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011). They are counting on these movies to be, at the very least, moderate successes. Perhaps not as big as Iron Man, which itself had a second film most fans didn't shine to as much as the first (personally I liked it a little more), but at least big enough to encourage more films.

Of course, not everything can be said with a picture, but considering these are the first official photos chosen to be shown you would assume they are among the very best to show. Wouldn't you?

Yeah I agree. I'm still really looking forward to this movie, but these pictures are really lowering my expectations.

wow, that last picture looked like a typical Academy Awards set. Not that this film will ever get that close to one, mind you… I'm sensing original Clash of the Titans scenery chewing without the cool Ray Harryhausen stop motion monsters.

  3. MajorFilmFan

Damn! This movie looks so fucking GAY! I admit I was excited when I heard about it, becasue I LOVE Superhero movies. But, this looks like SHIT! Deffinatly NOT seeing this one. :( Sir Anthony Hopkins can do WAY betterthan THIS, that's for sure!

  4. potato_skins

I'm hoping that decent effects and action sequences paired with some bad ass music will make this movie watchable. Fingers firmly crossed.

Thor has always looked goofy, just look him up on wikipedia and see what I mean. I would have preferred if they based the costumes more on the modern looks (or better yet the Ultimate comics, which actually look real world), but whatever. At this point, I'm more worried about a good story.

Brad, I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself by calling for a bust already. We have yet to even have a trailer yet, or any footage. I'm sure Comic-Con this week will provide us with some of that.

As for the supposed goofy look, you have to remember that they live in a different dimension, not Earth. The setting seems spot on to me when I think of what it would look like. I'm not saying I'm head over heels with the photos so far, but I don't think they're that bad.

Not calling for a bust, just speculating. I am clearly just saying the pictures don't look good… which is merely an opinion. I leave the door open for things to improve.

      • Martian Army

Fair enough. Like I said, I'm not necessarily in love with what has been released yet either, and I'm really hoping it surprises all of us. I'm sure we'll get some stuff released at Comic-Con on Saturday.

  7. i need see the trailer first. so far i am not happy with this. the trailer is make or break for me.

Could you imagine if all of the comic-book movies released next summer fail miserably? I could.

    • And pigs will fly…

People will see them because they're the only major blockbusters being produced. The same way transformers 2 did the business because… well, there wasn't anything better on*.

      * okay, that's a lie – there wasn't anything better withe $20m advertising and publicity campaign on.

I don't think Thor is gonna turn out to be very good. I mean look at these pics, it looks like cheap movie you see on the Syfi channel. I'll see what people say, then I'll maybe see it.

  10. George Kis

The pics remind me of a Chronicles of Riddick type feel- without the dark and gritty tone which is what made the movie great. They need less Spider man color stuff and more Dark Knight/Riddick effects IMO

  11. AJ

Eh, I'm not overly moved one way or another. The bottom picture looks like it could be kind of cool on film to me, but none of the shots look exciting, certainly. Either way, I'll wait for news to come out of the comic con this weekend before I start to form even the earliest of opinions.

As a bit of website feedback, though, this whole thread feels below the level of discussion I tend to expect from this site.

My first thoughts when i saw the "Throne Room" pic was the 80's Masters of the Universe movie starring Dolph Lungdren..

  13. This movie is going to be really good or really bad. so far my hopes are not high.

  14. maja

It does remind me alot of the original Superman film in terms of the sets. I know nothing about Thor, but with the churning out of comic book movies over the last 5 years this at least looks different to them…not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing yet.

  15. Yeah, not a big fan of the set, but then, it's more that I enjoy Norse mythology so that certainly wasn't how I pictured Asgard, but then again, I'm not out right dismissing this movie based on these pics. There is more to a good movie than how one set looks or even how a pic of actors in costumes look. It's a bit superficial to say "I'm not seeing that" just from these pics. Branagh can be both bad (Frankenstein) and awesome (Hamlet, Dead Again) so I'll wait to see how the editing, the acting, the overall story looks before I say whether I'll see it or not. You know, the other important elements to good filmmaking.

  16. roachj

I don't dislike these photo's, and I love the last photo. The set look amazing.
But I have immense faith in Branagh and really I didn't expect anything too different. The incredibly metallic costumes don't look amazing but that's something that depends on lighting and can be fixed in post production which they haven't even started yet.

I'll be looking forward to hearing what people say about the footage they'll show at Comic-Con this weekend.

  17. greatoz

I'm getting a bad FLASH GORDON vibe from that last shot…I wonder if a fat bird man will fly in with a mace or someone shouts "Bring me the bore worms!!"

  18. Leandro Dubost

Awful. Looks comparable to Batman & Robin so far.

  19. dre

When the black leather X-Men costumers leaked, everyone thought they looked horrible then as well… they worked okay in the movie.

Hope this is the same case because right now, yeah, lame.

  20. RG

WOW… talk about some pretty harsh comments based solely on a couple of pics!!! Aren't you guys jumping the gun here a little bit??? — especially the author who posted this article! I don't know, but to me the set looks epic. Yeah, I'm not totally sold on those costumes, and of course everyone is entitled to an opinion, but let's just wait for the trailer this weekend before we declare this movie a "joke", shall we?

  21. Charles

The set doesn't look too bad. Reminds me of something that William Cameron Menzies, the famed set designer, would have created.

  22. Kyle

i know nothing about the comics but the costumes and the background make this look terribly campy and filled with cheese. Anthony Hopkins looks wierd what is that thing over his eye?

  23. Me

I disagree with most of you. This looks great.

  24. michaelD

This movie is going to rock. for one the pictures of costumes never look the same as the do on film. Chris Hemsworth has bulked up alot to fufil this role. most of all it is a story from a comic book not some true sad story or some 80's action flick with michael bay explosives in it. Thors story from the comics has ranged from cheesy to epic. He is all about presence and i believe Chris will give us that. Everyone else in this movie is going to support him verry well. I dont need to see a trailer to believe in this. Hell trailers are sometimes the only good thing about a movie but not this one!!!!!!!

  25. zyzygy

If a known concept like Hulk failed to impress twice(I actually liked the Ed Norton one)Thor is going to be Marvel's Batman and Robin.
