Could this film possibly get the family friendly PG rating?

After seeing this I wonder if Avatar will be PG or PG-13 because this trailer is obviously aimed at an audience 10 or 12-years-old and younger with its happy-go-lucky music and bouncy voice over basically telling us to look forward to a wild and wonderful ride on an alien planet. By the sound of it Indiana Jones may show up and have a rip-rootin' good time!

I guess it all depends on how graphic the violence is. One thing I believe is the case, the MPAA tends to go lighter on alien violence than it does on human violence. So if it's a bunch of aliens getting blown away perhaps it can earn a PG rating, but in all honesty I am expecting a PG-13 rating, and parents will take their children to see it anyway.

Check out the new trailer below. Avatar hits theaters on December 18, click here for more trailer and pictures from the film.

    Oh MY EYES!
That was horrible, why are you posting that without any warning??

I really hope this is just a trick to attract small kids to the movie in the first week, before parents realize it is not meant for them.
PIXAR's trailers are more mature than this!

  2. Bram

That trailer really alienates teens. Although, if I was a kid I would want to see this, but I would also want to see the PG-13 version.

    DAMN YOU FOX!!!!!

  4. EnglishGavz

Is this a sign perhaps Fox are wondering whether they will be able to make profit with only a PG-13 audience?

  5. Paes

Titanic had nudity so they banked it with teen girls in love with Leonardo DiCaprio… Now Fox realized that this movie does not have the same appeal so they are resorting to kids to bank it…
That may be the only reason to destroy a perfectly good mature sci-fi franchise…

  6. Jimmy

PG or PG-13, I doubt it will make anything near its budget.

  7. Kevin

Wait, so it comes out in a little over a month and still isn't rated?

  8. Colin

Please tell me this is a joke

God fucking damn, what the hell was Fox thinking when they put that trailer together? James Cameron couldn't have approved that mess of shit!

Let these Avatar trailers be a lesson to you: editing can make the same footage have a completely different context. First there was the teaser trailer, which was vague and made the animation look sort of bad. Then there was the extended trailer, which was awesome and made this look epic and exciting. And then there's this trailer, which makes it look appropriate only for people below the age of 12.

It HAS to be rated PG-13. Fox would be very, very, very, VERY stupid to demand a PG from this. PG-13 is still the most commercially viable rating, and this movie needs to be commercially viable.

    Bizarre

After viewing this trailer, I'm gonna admit, it seems a lot less cool to look forward to this film now. But, that's mostly due to the beauty of editing trailers- you can add goofy music to anything & it'll be a completely different movie.
Try mixing "Walking on Sunshine" with the trailer for "Precious" and you'll see what I mean.

Also…does anyone think that this trailer totally made the film look like a "Delgo" rip-off?

Let me say that again. Delgo. DELGO. I hope that's not an omen.

The TV spot was aimed at kids. The movie isn't. This movie won't be a kids' movie, don't worry. It will CERTAINLY be PG-13. And about the music, it's not bad in the right context. It's "To Places Never Imagined", by Immediate Music. It's one of Immediate Music's weaker songs. Most of their songs are intense and epic.

  13. Colin

Seriously this has to be a joke. This thing cannot be real. If it is then this movie is going to fail horribly. I hope that this is somone's idea of a prank.

  14. Chris

This trailer is exclusive to Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, guys. Of course it's going to be like this, they are trying to market to all different age ranges, including younger viewers. Just like how they showed another TV spot with all kinds of explosions during a football and baseball game.

  15. vin@Vince: I never saw Delgo…i dont really think anyone saw Delgo, but after looking on line at such a flop, and having to see for myself, i watched the trailer for Delgo, and sadly, it is true…this sort of looks like a rip-off of Delgo…
    BUT——–
I trust Cameron on this one! 11 years, new technology, and a guy who can come up with one hell of a good story…I just hope they dont put out more crap trailers like this one!

If you go to the avatar website, it used to say "Parents of Children Might Want to Excersise Discretion". Chances are, this will be a hard PG-13 with something like that. Also, the majority of Cameron's movie have been R's. His PG-13's were hard PG-13's. I doubt that he will make a PG rated movie. Also, it looks like there will be some alien nudity in it. So i doubt it will be PG.

  17. nothing worse than a bad trailer to lower your expectations
i'm sure this is just to put kids in the seats we haven't waited more than a decade for a pg movie

  18. Nina

    Oh God the music.

  19. Danny

So I watched this trailer. I've seen the "exciting" trailer for it too. I think no matter what the movie is going to do well. It's coming out at the right time of year and it's smart for them to market it to many different age ranges. I, for one, am not overly excited about the movie like a lot of people are. I do like James Cameron. Terminator T2, and The Abyss are some of my favorite movies. But this movie, as good as the effects look and as epic as the story looks, just doesn't seem to be my cup of coffee. I'll still probably see it… but I don't have "huge expectations" for it. And who knows, I see it and end up loving it. But as of right now, It's not a "go see on opening weekend" movie for me.

  20. gary james

    It's disney.
fck it,looks like cameron has sold out.

  21. Tommy

Too much on-screen CGI still looks abysmal. compare this to The Dark Crystal and tell me which one looks more real.

  22. tina

i am trying to book my sons 7 year old party at a movie theater Dec 19- but am wondering if this movie will be to scary for a bunch of 7 year olds… i wonde rwhen the rating will come out..

  23. tibercio

This movie was utterly inappropriate for kids under age 13.

Matter of fact, with all the violence, I really thought it should have been rated R. Or, at least about 5 or 10 minutes of unnecessary and non-essential violence should have been edited out to make the PG-13 cut.

I saw parents bringing their two children who looked about 4 and 6 years old. Unbelievably bad parenting move!

  24. Crystal

I know this movie has been out for a long time. But I was so upset when I bought it for my children. The language was go horrible. The movie was great buy now they can't watch it.
