The Dude is Up for the Duke's Role in Coens' 'True Grit'
From Wayne to Bridges all for the Coens
Jeff Bridges is known for many roles, but perhaps none are more iconic than his role as Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski in the 1998 film The Big Lebowski. So when you hear the Dude may play a role originated by the Duke it just somehow seems like bigger news than it may actually be.
That's the word, though, from Michael Fleming at Variety as Jeff Bridges is said to be in discussions with Paramount to star in Joel and Ethan Coen's redo of True Grit, a film that starred John Wayne as a one-eyed, broken-down marshal in this 1969 adaptation of Charles Portis's bestselling novel. The Coen feature is said to have been redrafted by the brothers to be more faithful to the Portis novel.
The story centers on a 14-year-old girl who tags along with an aging U.S. marshal, Rooster Cogburn, and another lawman to track the outlaw who killed her father. The original told the story from Cogburn's point of view, but the new version will work from the viewpoint of the girl.
Kim Darby originated the role of the 14-year-old girl while the film marked John Wayne's first and only Oscar win.
Bridges will next be seen in The Men Who Stare at Goats before he plays an iconic character of his own as Kevin Flynn in Tron Legacy due out December 17, 2010.

"marked John Wayne's first and only Oscar win."
A true statement, BUT by the amount of fans around this country and around the world loyal to John Wayne, even to this day, 30 years after his death, there are many who think he should have won several more.
The Hollywood left didn't allow for that, it would seem.
@Chester: Oh God not another one of those "damn liberal" guys.
Look there's no denying that John Wayne was one of the biggest movie stars in history but was he wasn't really much of an actor. He almost always stuck with roles that were safe and predictable throughout his career and let others take the riskier projects. The fact he won an oscar is more a tribute to his status as a movie star then his acting.
I just mention this because I'm so sick of bloggers who blame everything on political bias.
anyone know what year we should be expecting True Grit?
i assume the one movie a year streak by the coens will be over after A Serious Man, so should we be looking at a 2011-ish release?
I have a love-hate relationship with the Academy because of things like Wayne getting shafted repeatedly. He was better in The Searchers than True Grit anyway. Sometimes I will see a movie just because critics hate it or avoid one because they love it. Took ten years for me to get around to watching Life is Beautiful, wish it had been twenty years.
