The Broadcast Film Critic Noms are In With a Couple of Big Surprises
Did they just not see/include 'Revolutionary Road'?
UPDATE: Damn, I just noticed they also snubbed Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein for I’ve Loved You So Long. Bummer.
The Broadcast Fim Critics have announced the nominees for the 14th annual Critics’ Choice Awards and I cannot manage to find any real surprises, at least in my eyes, outside of a couple. The BFCA seem to agree with my personal opinion that The Reader is a much stronger film and Kate Winslet is much better in it than Revolutionary Road by giving The Reader a picture nom as well as a nod for Winslet as a supporting actress. However, I don't think Leonardo DiCaprio deserved a snub, his performance in Revolutionary Road was one of his best ever, and the snub not giving Michael Shannon a nomination and instead awarding one to James Franco for Milk is a slap in the face. Seriously, those two decisions are baffling.
Other than that, here are your noms. The Critics Choice Awards will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and will air live on VH1. The BFCA is hoping to take over the spotlight from the Golden Globes and become the major precursor to the Oscars. Outside of the Revolutionary Road dismissal I can't say I mind. However, let's take it down to five nominations for each category, stop trying to make things so easy on yourselves.

That Best Director line-up is perfect. Just what I imagine come Oscar nominations.
I also think we shouldn't count anyone out until the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday and the SAG nominations next week.
Crap, another film list without "Revotlutionary Road". I doubt that it is still an Oscar contender.

Agreed, Garrett. We don't agree on much, but this time I think you right. These awards don't mean much, but the Golden Globes and SAG awards are the two biggest motion picture award ceremonies besides the academy awards.
Just last year one of these unimportant critics awards didn't even include There will be Blood in their top 10 list, i believe it was the National board of reviews. So we don't really know what films will be nominated of a oscar until it happens.
And don't forgot when Into the Wild dominated the Critics Choice nominations and got almost nothing at the Oscar. Although, based on reviews and industry buzz, I'm starting to think the safe top five for Best Picture are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Milk and Slumdog Millionaire.
@JerzeyJon: Awesome that you agree, but to be honest, I can't recall ever really disagreeing with you, except in the blunt terms of Heath Ledger for Supporting Actor. Have we debated in real life and I was just oblivious to it? Probably not.
I'm hearing that the BFCA didn' get screenings of Revolutionary Road until Friday and they had already voted by then. So the snubs were because they hadn't seen it yet.
Anyway I wouldn't make such a big deal out of these. Globes and Sags are coming up and I'm sure Michael and RR will be in the mix.
