The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations are Here
Who will be taking home the Actors this year?
Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.
First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.
The other nominations causing me to scratch my head are those for Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren in The Last Station. Both are perfectly fine in that film, and it's a good film, but to say they deserve award recognition over the likes of Christian McKay, Alfred Molina or Peter Sarsgaard on Plummer's side is silly, or Marion Cotillard in Nine for Mirren's is a bit of an oversight.
As for the rest of the nominees, no big surprises. The complete list of the motion picture and television noms are as follows…
- Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
- George Clooney, Up In the Air
- Colin Firth, A Single Man
- Morgan Freeman, Invictus
- Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker

well i guess if your looking for suprises, Diane Kruger is one big suprise for me, I would of put the girl who played Soshana in front of her IF anyone
Considering she hadn't been nominated in one single Critics' list, Diane Kruger's nod was quite a shock for me, pleasant though it is. I think Mélanie Laurent didn't get a nomination because she was considered a leading actress by the Weinstein Company (take a look at the FYC posters) and competition got her out. Howver, I have to say I hadn't seen Sandra Bullock coming neither on the Golden Globes nor on the SAG Awards and I'm under the strong impression that her place could be fairly taken by Mélanie or even Marion Cotillard. I just hope the nominations for the Academy Awards don't change too much from this. I'd be happy if it followed last year's trend and was almost the same as SAG. I'm very happy with Inglourious Basterds' campaign so far and I daresay it's truly well-deserved.
No MARION?
Thats a travesty. I saw the film last night and she was the the best out of that movie which kind of dragged but it was ok. Marion has been getting nominated in every single awards and now no SAG? Doesn't make any sense, but i guess i can live with it.
I am happy Basterds is getting lotsa nomination love but sad to see Mélanie Laurent not getting recognized for her great performance as Shoshanna in the film. She should easily be on the Best Actress list instead of Bullock. ALso I wonder if Waltz has a legitimate shot at leading Actor in the film at the Oscars instead of supp. actor.
I for one, LOVE the Diane Kruger nomination. I also thought Melanie Laurent was fantastic – but people seem to be forgetting that Laurent is being pushed in LEAD, so even if she did get some votes for supporting, most people probably gave her votes for ACTRESS (and the Lead Actress pool seems to have taken shape already)!
Go Inglourious Basterds!
Poor Viggo – another ASTONISHING performance….with no nomination :(
I was so bored by Diane Kruger in IngloriBastards. If anything, Melanie would have been very welcome over her.
Bridges, Mulligan, Waltz and Mo'Nique should (and will) get it
I think Melanie Laurent had one of the best performances in Inglourious Basterds, and she deserve a nomination in the best actress category… However, Im really REALLY happy to see Diane Kruger on best supporting.
Inglourious Basterds is the best film of the year so far =)!!!
Where are the women of BIG LOVE ? and for god's sake, January Jones of Mad Men.
Its always the movie stars of TV making the grade when no-one is watching those shows.
Man, I'm happy for Sandra Bullock.
A little love for Diane Krueger. I'm glad!
Well Diane Kruger did played it good…then so did Melanie Laurent..i dont know about this category..but i m happy for Jeremy Renner….
i have to say i'm upset the cast of a serious man isn't getting any love! i thought that was one of the best cast i've EVER seen!! especially michael stuhlberg. tis shame but oh well
So Nine and An Education both get ensemble nominations, but only one actor from each film is being singled out for an individual nomination…and Up in the Air has three individual actors nominated, but no ensemble recognition…Can someone explain that to me?
@Danny King:
Danny, I'm not an expert but my impression is that the "ensemble" is liken to a best picture nomination and is not really about the ensemble itself. I think its just a title, not a literal meaning.
@gilmore: That's possible, but if it's the case, Up in the Air would've been all the more likely to receive an ensemble nomination as it is surely ahead of An Education in the Best Picture race right now.
@gilmore and @Danny King: No, the SAGs are for actors by actors with an emphasis and focus on acting. So when it says best ensemble it means just that, looking at the film in terms of the best acting from the entire cast.
I think Diana Kruger being nominated is an amazing effort – the film was brilliant and the short period of time in which was in was really incredible!
I'm interested to see the Last Station because of all this buzz around the two performances, however, I disagree with the comments about Alfred Molina and Peter Sarsgaard in An Education. I thought the movie was brilliant but I just never really thought there performances got to shine above Carey. To me they were solid performances but nothing special. I'm happy with what I'm seeing from this season of nominations.
@Brad Brevet: Makes sense…Then I'm still confused on why Up in the Air was snubbed on Best Ensemble when three of its actors were nominated individually.
The Hurt Locker will take Best Ensemble easily. It's been winning that exact award for quite some time.
i cant believe alfred molina didnt get a supporting nom for An Education. he was amazing in that film
