There is no doubt about whether or not there will be another Superman movie. However, the nature of the film is obviously up in the air. Will it be a sequel to Superman Returns? Who will write it? Who will direct it? Who will star?

Personally I don't think it necessarily needs to be made as the nature of the Superman character never really intrigued me and the original Christopher Reeve films are going to have a hard time being matched, but just because it is challenging doesn't mean you shouldn't try and apparently they still are.

Peter at SlashFilm sent over word he had been sent backdoor entrance into a password protected portion of the Legendary Picture site where the above screen capture obviously indicates they are still hard at work trying to get something put together as the latest working title is Superman Unleashed with the following description:

Ramping up the action of its esteemed predecessor, the sequel to ‘Superman Returns’ promises to raise the stakes and take the audience to heights of action that no other superhero movie can achieve.

Lofty expectations eh?

I so hope we get a reboot instead of sequel. I would hate for them to carry over all that junk from the last movie. The whole Donner-verse is tired and played out anyway. Just start over.

the first one (superman returns) was horrible and with that caption above this movie had better be amazing!

  3. Hero

Please enough of the reboot crap…we dont need to be told AGAIN the origins of superman.

    Returns is underrated!!!

  4. Quake82

@Hero: Thank you. I completely agree. Was Superman Returns the best superhero movie ever made? Was it the best Superman film ever? No and No; but it was still such a great film. I think the best thing to do is make a quality, epic, film.

Stick true to the first film. Superman is not Batman. He's never been a very dark character and you know what? Even in today's depressing times, people can relate to an epic film about a morally upright, alien, that defends us all.

@Quake82: haha that last line made me laugh, not in the bad way but just sounded funny. honestly i never liked supermans story line maybe because iv always loved Batman and that darker tone and also that Batman was just a man with no powers and how he still struggles with real human problems. But i dont hate on superman and understand he has his problems too but i just feel there just isnt much depth to him or everyone else in his world and i feel that it will be hard to do a dark film or an moody one at that. I saw make one about him and doomsday and break it into 2 films and see what the returns cash and review wise are.

  6. I think this is the best idea because SR needs the sequel because SR is epic film. SR is not boring. I think Brandon Routh did a good job as Superman. Keep Brandon. Give Superman Unleashed the best Superman franchise like The Dark Knight.

Superman Returns was excellent. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know the superman character.
Each part of it from beginning to end was briliant.
A sequel is a far better idea than a reboot; no more reboots, unless it's a new Daredevil movie (Ben will not come back anyway).

  8. EscoBond

Give us our sequel to RETURNS, please!!! No reboot! Get onto the next major villain! Brainiac, Darkseid, Bizarro, Metallo, anyone of his awesome supervillains, someone he can throw down with! You know a reboot would just retell his origin and give us another Lex movie, pls God no reboot!

  9. Peter

Superman returns was okay and Bryan singer promised more action and superman will FIGHT a powerful enemy so How come some people have forgotten that and and want a reboot while the sequel would been more action give me a break! I hope this superman unleashed is the sequel .

  10. I vote sequel with Brandon Routh. He really did do a great job as Clark Kent/Superman. He brought back the mannerisms of classic Reeve Superman and added a bit of modern class to the character. In the new Superman, I would like to see more of an epic battle. Maybe something a bit darker. I wanna see Superman get pushed to the edge. And I wanna see him get angry. It would be nice to see him battle something non-humanoid, but if Lex Luthor must be in the next movie, please make him the sadistic killer he is. Show his true anger and hatred for Superman. Make him the most powerful man in Metropolis. I think that's my rant. Thank you all for reading!

  11. Turd Ferguson

Please God, no more lex luthor! We get it ok? Lex is his arch enemy, but there is tons of other baddies out there for supes to fight. Doomsday, brainiac, bizzaro that's where it's at!

i love superman. superman returns was a great movie. it got bad reviews because it wasnt a movie full of him kicking the bad guys ass like in the recent batman movies. i heard rumors of the new superman picking up after where the comic movie doomsday ends. meaning that superman is dead and that his son takes his place. i have also heard rumors that this new superman will have tom welling who plays clark in the show smallville. which is an excelent telling of clark kent and his becoming of superman. as of now on the show clark is getting ready to face off with doomsday. back to the main picture; for superman to get big reviews have lots of action. bring in doomsday, there is your darkness, have doomsday bring superman to his knees and make him rise up against the odds, push him to use all his abilities. superman returns wasnt popular because it was a movie about his return to earth after a five year period. it was necesary to show him catching up with people like lois lane, lex luther and his son, but now that that is taken care of make a real superman movie, full of action suspense. maybe have two of superman's foes team up and have a david verses golith battle. i have also heard news of a new wonder woman movie starring erica durance, plays lois lane on smallville, and that talks of a justice league movie is in the works too. starring batman christian bale, superman either routh or welling and even justin hartley, plays green arrow on smallville, as aqua-man. it seems to me that smallville is producing actors and actresses that can play superhero roles well.

  13. Bryan

NO REBOOT! We all know the origins and we're all SICK of Luthor. I liked SR. Would have loved if they wouldn't have thrown the kid in there. I know in movies that have can go off canon from the comics but giving him a son… that was a bit to out there.

  14. Jim

I hope this film does turn out to be a sequel even thou the information has been removed from the website. Some people believe that this is some old information that Legendary Pictures forgot to remove, but that is hard to believe they forgot after three years. Furthermore, I'm glad Singer gave Superman a son, because in gives a chance to tell moving father/son story.

  15. Jason

@bma boy: Tom welling as Superman?! You're crazy! And Smallville STARTED good but has lately gone too far off course. I can understand the writers doing their own version but for Clark to face Brainiac, Bizzaro, and Doomsday (more like get his ass kicked by doomsday without ever touching him) BEFORE he ever dons the cape…rediculous! Not to mention the fact that nearly a dozen other characters in the show can fly but Clark's still earthbound!? Smallville has turned earth's greatest hero into a superpowered reluctant whinning baby. Brandon Routh wasn't bad but he also didn't have a ton of lines or real emotion to act out…but I'd still rather see him over Tom Welling. And having two of Superman's foes at once is VERY dangerous. Look what putting multiple Supervillains in one movie did to Spiderman 3. As for all those Smallville actors taking up roles as other DC heroes, I'm gonna have to call bullshit. However, I do agree that it was necessary to show Superman "catching up" after returning to earth in Superman Returns.

  16. Jason

I do hope to see a darker, angrier Superman. A villain that he'll have to pull all the stops out to defeat is needed to make the next movie a success. Because of the long wait between Superman IV and Superman Returns, I don't think most people were necessarily looking to see an all action movie, just something memorable. But, for the next one to do well, I think it'll have to far exceed the intensity of any other Superman movie and show us his full power. Here's an idea: most probably won't like it but I'd love to see a movie based on the "Superman Prime" character from the comics. A massively more powerful Superman with more darkness in him than any pervious movie has depicted.

  17. wayne

superman returns wasnt to bad a movie but its major flaw was the lack of action what us fans need is to see superman smashed up a bit like when he fought doomsday get beat the shit out of costume ripped to bits, blood comming out of him and then using williams legendary score see superman rise against it all to prevail now thats a superman film id like to see. returns story was good although im not really into the whole superman son shit to be honest. if you look at the donner films the best part of the second movie is the part where his father gives him his powers back (on the donner cut) and why is the 2nd superman movie the best coz superman is fighting 3 dudes with the same powers he has he get knocked about a bit now in a new movie id have superman smashed up good and then fight his way back

  18. NTF

super is overrated now! . Most hero;s have a weakness, but liek it show you in this movie, that nitenight xannot kill him as you see in superman retuns.

  19. papaDIMAS

well, i tought bryan has learned his lessons and made a vow to make a real thriller after his naughty "bastard supe's kid"

I think the majority is missing the point. Superman was never meant to be an action movie. You simply can't have an action movie when your protagonist is immune to everything except for one green rock. Superman has always been about the drama Kal El experiences as the sole survivor of his race locked in solitude among the human race and his decisions that led to taking up the role of the earth's savior. Also, it must be said, that the Christopher Reeves' Superman series, with exception to the first installment was a tremendous flop. The best way to view the superman story is like M. Night Shamalan's Unbreakable, it deals with the drama the character faces with each decision.
I believe the best bet for any production company would be to use the writers for Smallville, if not the whole cast. The reason is, that when Smallville was first going through casting, Al Gough and Miles Millar really had no idea about the collective mythology of the franchise. So much to the point that they interviewed Anette O'Toole for the role of Martha Kent without even realizing that she played the role of Lana Lang in the third installment of the Christopher Reeves' collection. After, however, they got their act together and Smallville has continued to follow the mythology perspectively, fairly well.
And of course, any true Superman fan is waiting for Doomsday. This will be the overall grossing installment to the Superman franchise and special effects are finally up to speed to create this fantastic battle. I guarantee any halfway decent depiction of the Doomsday saga will gross and gross high. This will be the movie that blows the top off of everything. We just need the executives to get off their $400 pressed pin-striped pants and use their imaginations a little.
I personally have been waiting since '06 as it was rumored Superman Returns was to be the first of three and Doomsday was slated as the final installment. And for anyone who has read this far and doesn't know who Doomsday is, he's the guy who kills Superman in an epic battle from Kansas to New York (comic book Metropolis) and the two beat each other to death. All I know is if this movie doesn't come to fruishion, I will be deeply disappointed in DC Comics for passing up their equivilant of a golden ticket.

To jason@bmaboy: remember that doomsday from smallville wasn't doomsday. They created a character with a conscience for smallville and divided that conscience from the pure evil and destruction of what we know as Doomsday. They created a loophole where they could introduce the character with a weakness, that being his Davis Bloom half which was severed before the burial of doomsday. This was very intelligent.
Also, Smallville has very affectively introduced the JLA without being over the top of cheesy and I think that if the writers and crew can do that, they very much deserve an attempt at the movie franchise. If nothing else, a connecting movie between Smallville and the emergence of Superman.
