One thing horror is definitely good for is a franchise

Variety announced a pair of horror franchise sequels prepping for production starting off with word a sequel to last year's The Strangers will begin shooting next fall for Universal's genre arm Rogue Pictures.

The original, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, was a breakout hit centering on a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. Bertino came back to write The Strangers 2, but French helmer Laurent Briet will direct. Briet's career includes music videos and some work on the visual effects for The Ring 2.

There is no word on a storyline, but the end of the original film had the invaders heading off in their fan saying something to the effect of "It'll be easier next time." The film ended up grossing $80 million worldwide on a $9 million budget. The biggest question at the end was whether or not Liv Tyler's character survived.

Personally, I thought the first half of The Strangers was fantastic, but it fell all apart for me at the end when it gave in to horror cliches. However, I know I am in the minority.

But I'm not sure I am in the minority when it comes to the Saw franchise which will see its sixth installment hit theaters this October and now there's word Saw VII has been greenlit with plans for January start of production and Saw V helmer, David Hackl set to direct. Scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who penned the fourth, fifth and sixth films, are writing the seventh.

The trailer for Saw VI arrived online yesterday and I have included it directly below, and you can check out an R-rated clip in my Comic Con round-up right here.

Are you the minority for not enjoying "The Strangers"? Is that what you wanted to say? Most of my friends didn't like it – and I loved it, until the end. It scared the hell out of me.

Of course I'm not happy with the annoucement of a sequel, but what can I do…

I thought "The Strangers" was excellent up until their friend played by Glenn Howerton showed up (it wasn't him obviously, but what happened next. From there on in I knew what to expect). I'll still say it's one of the better horror films in the last few years but it definitely fell apart, "Event Horizon Syndrome" as my friend Jay dubbed it.

As for the never ending Saw series, I do have to say that 5 was actually a step up from 3 and 4 but it still has yet to come close to the magic of the original. I've seen all of them on DVD so I'm sure I'll end up watching this as well, but I don't know how they can keep getting blood from the stone.

@Trevor: Right there with you Trevor, that's about the exact moment I bailed as well.

I really really enjoyed the strangers. It had me scared from pretty much start to finsh. I think it is one of the more better horror films in the last 2 or 3 years and I am stoked for a sequal. As for saw 7? I am ready to see all that come to a magjior end. I was ready to see it stope after the first one, I do not find saw scary in any way. Just bloody and sadstic.

Im a big fan of The entire Saw series as well as The Strangers!!! I have all of them added to my movie collection already! I cant wait fr Saw 7 and The Stranger 2… ill be in attendance opening night for both of them!
I must say..i think the Saw concept was/is completely original…. and plus it really makes u thnk about the concept of human nature as well… A really good example of a psychological horror series!!! I cant say much for anyone who didnt enjoy the fist installment… it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time because i never knew what was going to happen next… I give majpr props to the creators!!!
