Stephen King Releases His Top Ten Flicks of 2008

Differing opinions make it all so much more fun

Stephen King has just unveiled his personal top ten list for 2008 and The Dark Knight is at the top as a film he says is "the best superhero movie ever. This is to cape-and-tights movies what Godfather II was to the gangster movie: a genre-defining event." However, while his list also includes Slumdog Millionaire and WALL-E, that is the end of anything remotely resembling your traditional end of year top ten. Then again, that's what makes it sort of fun.

His list includes a pair of Jason Statham features, Lakeview Terrace (a film he believes Sam Jackson should get an Oscar nomination for) as well as a few others you may have forgotten.

Of the ten I will say only two of them are just plain bad movies in my opinion (Funny Games and Lakeview) while Redbelt is just mediocre. Check out the list below as the year end lists continue to pile up.

  1. The Dark Knight
  2. Slumdog Millionaire
  3. WALL-E
  4. Tropic Thunder
  5. Funny Games
  6. The Bank Job
  7. Lakeview Terrace
  8. The Ruins
  9. Redbelt
  10. Death Race

Get his list of reasons behind each choice right here.

Well, Of course Stephen "The DARKest mind in literature" King is going to pick The DARK Knight as his favorite.

What the hell is 'the Ruins' doing in there. I'll admit as a story it was interesting and good, but the tension in the film left a lot to be desired. Midnight meat train was better, it has not even been released yet in Ireland, but I saw it the other day and I enjoyed it more. I love anything KING and I love that his choices are varied and the Dark Knight is at the top, but WHAT THE HELL? the Ruins?

I would have expected him to put a horror movie in front of The Dark Knight. However, he made the right choice. Good job, Stephen King.

and the Bank Job, what is with you American's and Jason Statham? I have to wonder, he's ok, but he just seems to do really well in USA, why?

@Aly: Actually we don't care about him as much as you think.

I can't think of anyone here in the US whose a fan of him. To me he's just an actor that's "around", not very interesting, not very liked, he's just there. Studios just book him because he looks like a bad ass. That's it.

Hey, lay off my man Jason "Turkish" Statham. While his career constantly seems to run off course (The One, The Transporter Series), I still think he's a fine actor. His roles in Snatch & Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels has forever earned him a place on my list of "good" (though not exceptional) actors.

Considering his love of schlocky action/horror films, I'm not surprised King included The Ruins & Death Race on his list. However, since he included The Dark Knight, Tropic Thunder, Wall-E & Slumdog Millionaire, I'll forgive him for some of his less-than-oscar-worthy fare.
