'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace' in 3D is Less than a Year Away

3D 'Star Wars' is not so far, far away

StarWars.com has officially announced their latest attempt to squeeze some additional money out of the ever-loving Star Wars fans is less than a year away as the 3D converted edition of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace will arrive in theaters on February 10, 2012.

The announcement says the conversion was supervised by Industrial Light and Magic with the "utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions." I wonder if they will be able to say the same thing when they attempt to convert the original trilogy into 3D… just which source material will they be referring to in that case?

It's the lack of respect that's been shown for the first three Star Wars films that puts a damper on this news, not to mention the conversions we've seen to date with the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender and The Green Hornet have been far less than impressive.

All that aside, I have to admit there's, a mild curiosity in seeing how this turns out. You?

As money-grabbing as it is — I haven't seen it in theaters. I would probably go if me and a couple of friends could make MST3K-style comments during the show.

But it's a bad idea. Who would take their significant other to see a Star Wars film on Valentine's Day? On the other hand, a 3D 'Phantom Menace' is preferable over something as potentially crappy as 'Ghost Rider 2' the week after.

Will definitely watch, just to see how this will look in 3D.
Won't have high hopes (hype for Episode 1? again? no please!)
But maybe it will be good, you never know.

They have a whole year to convert it. It's not the same situation as to Alice in Wonderland or Clash of the Titans, I guess.

By 2017, when Return of The Jedi will presumably hit theaters, George Lucas will be celebrating 40 Years of Star Wars success. The Holy trilogy will have been released to theaters at least three times apiece (each time with slightly different changes) and even the prequels (as of 2014) will have been altered and released twice.

The Saga will have been released on VHS, LaserDisc, DVD & Blu-ray and has spawned a micro-series, an animated tv series and possibly even a life-action tv series.

Is George Lucas a shameless money whore? Yes. Did he almost ruin the series with his "less-than" prequel trilogy? Yes. Do I still love Star Wars with that child-like innocence I see on the faces of my two nephews (8 & 6) as they play Lego Star Wars? Yes.

I don't care about the films being released in 3D. What I care about is that on February 10, 2012 three generations of Star Wars fans: my mother (b 1951), myself (b 1982) & two little boys (b 2003 & 2005) will sit down to start the saga all over again. My mother's generation may have got to see the originals in theaters and my nephews may know more about the saga from playing Xbox 360 & watching Cartoon Network, but through it all one thing has remained the same: Our unwavering love for the Epic Space Opera brought forth from the mind of George Lucas.

    Thems the facts

I'm not likely to go and see the prequel trilogy in 3D, but when the time rolls around I think I will probably go and see the original trilogy in the format.
