Why Wasn't 'Hellboy 2' Only 20 Minutes Long?
I think we can unearth this question now...

Spoilers lie ahead… read with caution…
I could ask a myriad of questions concerning Hellboy 2 as well as its coverage. Why did every outlet act as if a $34 million opening was something fantastic (I even fell for it on Friday)? What was that shower and locker scene all about? However, there is one question that really bugs me, and it is a big ol' spoiler so if you haven't seen the film then runaway and hide right now. Why wasn't Hellboy 2 only about 20 minutes long?
I ask this because you see that little lady above, that's Princess Nuala. She has a special bond with her brother Prince Nuada, the film's major baddie. In the film Nuada wants to start a war against the humans, something his father doesn't want to see happen and condemns him to death, which essentially also condemns Nuala to death as well. She seems ready to die and even looks a little sad about it.
Knowing of the special bond between the two Nuada turns to his sister and asks, "You agree with this?" She nods her head, yes, basically saying she is willing to kill herself to stop a war. What happens next? Nuada kills his father and Nuala runs away and we have another 90 minutes of film to endure before, yup, you guessed it, Nuala kills herself and ends it all.
So, why didn't she just kill herself in the beginning and save us from all the stupid jokes, shower scenes and CGI battles that were just filler before she finally smarted up? I guess we will never know.

I saw this movie and thought the same thing. I think it was very cheesy. Dumb jokes. There was also a lady sitting behind me that laughed at EVERYTHING Hellboy said. I'm not exaggerating. And of course she had the most annoying laugh. It sounded like baby birds getting punched in the stomach.
Anyway, I guess they can't just make a movie only 20 minutes long, so they think of ways of adding story. But, being Guillermo Del Toro, I really expected more of a story. I really didn't like trying to make Hellboy be very funny. Half way through the movie, I wanted it to end.
The only good thing about Hellboy was the cool creatures and the awesome special effects. I don't think GDT should have made this film. He could've saved all those awesome creatures for future movies.
Even if the film was only 20 minutes long, it'd still be awesome.
If it had been only 20 minutes long I would be more inclined to agree with you.
Yeah, if this movie is 20 minutes it gets a solid B. If she just kills herself right there I'm saying.
There are way too many movies that should have been at most 20 minutes long. It has nothing to do with how bad they were, just that the solution was obvious at the start, or at least something everybody in the audience was silently chanting through the whole thing.
I generally consider a story to be a failure if it's as blatant as Hellboy. Come on! Put a little effort into not frustrating the audience. Oh, wait. I'm not the intended audience. The intended audience is bird-punch woman laughing and spewing popcorn bits all over the back of my head.
I am shocked, if there were any comments on this article I expected them to be people telling me how stupid I was because it was a comic book movie and logic doesn't apply. I mean, this film has over an 80% rating on RottenTomatoes. Are you telling me there is a chance the glad-handing critics may have got this one wrong?
I don't think that they got it wrong. I'm sure there's a lot of people that enjoyed it. It was entertaining. It has comedy, action and a romantic touch. I remember when I read your review I thought you were crazy. I didn't think it would be that bad, but after seeing it, I pretty much agree with everything you said. I really did want it to end half way through, and I did not like all the little comedy bits (like them getting drunk and talking about relationships).
After writing this little paragraph I do think that the critics got it wrong, at least in my opinion. It's just an average film to me. And since you were expecting people to call you stupid, I'll say it, you're a dumbass!
This reminds me of the discussion a while back about bloggers and internet movie sites. The major critics get published in newspapers and get shown on TV, and there are also hojillions of internet critics. Their first responsibility is to sell ads, and to some extent, sell tickets. If they told us which movies actually sucked, most of them (oh, I'm not cynical at all), nobody would read their reviews. They have to pander to their readers, the great unwashed masses, to some extent so that they can keep people coming back.
Ok, maybe I shouldn't comment after I've only gotten a few hours sleep. :)
Yeah kinda true i s'pose…………. but i like princess nuala, shes sweet, and i thought she stole the show. & there could've been like other alternatives to the storyline, for example……. their "bond" could've been broken, or nuada get sent to prison or something so nuala gets to live… i dunno lol
