Spielberg's Uncensored Exploding Head from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'

Raiders of the Lost Ark Exploding Head Uncensored
Photo: Paramount Pictures via Will McCrabb's Twitter

Cinematographer Will McCrabb tweeted out (via i09) the above photo offering a look at the uncensored exploding head of Paul Freeman's Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark before the MPAA made Steven Spielberg censor it with flames to cover up the gore. As the video below from Slate.com illustrates, it makes no sense why the MPAA would decide to censor this when the melting faces, in my opinion, are far more gruesome.

Speaking of which, McCrabb has added to his Twitter page several storyboards from the sequence to his Twitter account, all of which I've added below the video.

When I was kid it was ALWAYS the melting head that horrified me. I don't know how many times I watched that film before keeping my eyes open for it in full. The exploding head was fine.........maybe because it was less visible mind.

Yeah, we'll never know how what impact the exploding head would have had by comparison since it has always been censored. Would be interesting to set up a screening for kids that haven't seen the movie today with the uncensored version and see how they react and come away most affected by.
