Don't expect to see Topher Grace back for this one

UPDATE: Variety now reports that Venom, an arch enemy of the web-slinger in the Marvel Comics series, will be transformed into an anti-hero who becomes a defender of the innocent. I'm not a comic book reader so I have no idea how they would go about doing this without Spider-Man, but they must have some kind of a plan. The original story follows…

Mike Fleming at Variety is reporting Seabiscuit helmer and Spider-Man 4 co-writer Gary Ross is in line to direct Venom, a spin-off from 2007's Spider-Man 3 based on the character portrayed by Topher Grace.

Fleming says Ross will begin work rewriting the Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick screenplay after he completes his work on Spider-Man 4. Reese and Wernick are two names you'll recognize as writers of the recently released box-office topper Zombieland.

For those wondering what the approach will be to the film, it is expected to start from scratch, forgetting the events of Spider-Man 3 and likely to recast the part of Eddie Brock/Venom.

Most recently Wernick told Sci-Fi Wire they had written two drafts of Venom adding, "They're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward… Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step." It would seem Ross is the next step.

How come the script writers can up and forget "Spider-Man 3" and I can't??

  2. Garrett

Maybe now Venom will get the story that he deserves.

  3. you know it's a bad idea to do a spinoff when you need to omit the movie you're spinning off from…also how do you tell venom's story without spider-man?

I can't beleive you guys honestly think Spidey 3 was that bad! It wasn't! It was awesome! Sure, Venom should've had more screen time, but that's the only reason that you people on the internet don't like it! I'm glad Venom's getting a film! And people complain about his size. In the comics, he's really strong. In the film, he doesn't look like it, but Spider-Man doesn't look like it either and we all know he's strong! If they keep Topher Grace, I say, "Good choice!", and I'm sure that a lot of you people would say so, too!

  5. There are about a thousand other reasons to dislike spider-man 3…

Spider-Man 3 was the best spider-man movie. It was actually honest (that spider man is an ass), had the best story and best special effects. Spider Man 2 was so boring and the whole plot was so stupid, and 1 is pretty run-out-of-the mill for a superhero movie.
Venom didn't get enough screen time; he should've been saved for the 4th.
But this spin-off will fix that problem.

  7. i'm really happy about this they really sucked up venom in spider man 3 because he was barely in it and now they can do him better now that he's getting his own movie

  8. @Seiko: Spider-man 3 better than Spider-man 2? There's a laugh.

    spidey 2 was the shit

  10. Ben

spiderman 3 was awful. at least venom gets 2 hrs this time instead of the measly 20 he got in SM3
