Trailer for Sundance Winnner 'The Spectacular Now'

Set for an August release

The Spectacular NowLast year James Ponsoldt's Smashed didn't really make much of a dent in the landscape, forgotten by most or perhaps never seen. It featured a solid performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and despite my aversion to films about alcoholism, it was quite good.

Ponsoldt's new film, The Spectacular Now travels in similar territory and recently won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for its two leads -- Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) and Miles Teller (Rabbit Hole) -- and today the first trailer for the film has arrived.

The film is an adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel centered on Sutter Keely (Teller), a high school senior and a budding alcoholic. One night he gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Woodley) hovering over him. The film follows their relationship from that point forward.

Along with Teller and Woodley, the film stars Brie Larson, Dayo Okeniyi, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Andrew Royo, Bob Odenkirk, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kaitlyn Dever and Masam Holden and A24 has already set an August 2 release, which tells me this one will likely play Toronto.

Unfortunately I missed a screening of it here in Seattle during the Film Festival as it screened while I was away at Cannes, but I'm curious to see what Ponsoldt has in store this time around. Check out the first trailer directly below.

Oscar nom for Shailene Woodley? This looks great btw.

      • http://www.twitter.com/GregDinskisk GregDinskisk

I hope so! She was great in it, as was Miles Teller. Unfortunately I doubt she (they) will because they don't seem to nominate many Sundance-film performers in recent years... Wallis last year, sure, but people thought MANY people were going to from 2012's Sundance.

        Hope that made sense.

No, James Ponsoldt directed this and did not write it, yes the girl from The Descendants and the guy from Super 8, no boy from Super 8, yes it premiered at Sundance and yes it's being released this summer.

It will take a real gem to knock this off my #1 of the year. Loved this film!

Yeah this was a really good film. Definitely one of the best of the year and one of the best of the Seattle International Film Festival. Check out my review of the film here: http://smartfilm.blogspot.com/2013/05/siff-review-spectacular-now-is-touching.html

Also, I interviewed the director, James Ponsoldt, and he's just a very down to earth guy. If anyone's interested in that interview, check it here: http://smartfilm.blogspot.com/2013/05/talking-with-james-ponsoldt-of.html

This looks really great. Shailene Woodley was excellent in "The Descendants", and I hope she keeps doing movies like this.

Actually, it's quite interesting, I was a part of the SIFF Futurewave jury. We pretty much had to judge all of these films made by youth film makers that played in the seattle international film festival. Among The Spectacular Now we saw stuff like 7 Boxes, Blackbird, I Declare War and The African Cypher among other films. We got together and after arguing for hours we came to a decision of The Spectacular Now winning the award. I thought the film was fantastic, the acting and was really good along with the chemistry between characters I thought it was a very effective coming of age story. 4 out of 5 stars

Saw this at the San Francisco FIlm Festival and it is truly fantastic. James Ponsoldt is 2/2 so far in my book.

Well, I am all in for this. Was waiting for the trailer for a long time since it gained the buzz from Sundance. Hopefully this will do what Perks of Being Wallflower did to me last year.

By the way, Shailene Woodley is looking great in this one. With or without make-up, she is here to stay in Hollywood.

    Looks solid

Really bummed I missed this at Sundance although I did walk past Shailene Woodley on Main St. and may or may not have fallen in love. On another note, Kyle Chandler is one of my favorite character actors and this looks like it could definitely be a breakout for Miles Teller.

Looks great. This genre (high school coming of age) is having a comeback with Perks and now Spectacular.

    Wow. That looks great.
