This is a very witty monster movie favored by comedy writers for its bold character comedy, smart dialogue gags and great scenes of crowd-pleasing showmanship.

Oh Alex, come on man, just because an opening is better than what some may write doesn't make it acceptable. However, I don't think it is better than what some may write, and I also think the film could have been opened without it. Bong could have used text saying "In 2000, an American dumped formaldehyde into the Han River... There was no sign anything was wrong... Until now." He would have actually been using the same information (real information) and setting up a little more dread.

As for the complaints on nitpicking, I am not nitpicking, everything I mentioned is so obvious. It is right in front of your face. Also, story might not be everything, but without it there is no movie. The story in The Host got muddied with political agenda.

What exactly was the story? Save the little girl? Stop the family from saving the little girl? Kill the monster?

**SPOILERS COMING**

Not sure if you noticed, but the police NEVER hunt down the monster, there is a reason for this and it plays into the whole point of Bong's agenda. The Agent Yellow was never meant to kill the monster, it was meant to kill the virus. The virus they knew never existed. Thus, they were still not trying to kill the monster.

**SPOILERS ENDING**

This is just how I saw it all.

Oh, and I fixed that typo for yah. :)

Of course I'm one to know (being an editor myself of FirstShowing.net) that critiquing the opinion of others is just playful banter... but all in the same we all love doing it so why not contest your argument and attempt to either get you to think otherwise or strengthen your own considerations. So on that note...

I think you're claim here is just a bit of a too picky complaint going oh so close into the fine details of the intro story (who really cares if it's "childish", it's better than most people could write and gets the story going in some way).

As for the remainder of the story, complaining that the storytelling is tough and leaving out every other element that makes up a film from the visual to the acting is simply irrational. Of course the story is important but no matter how much you may argue, the story isn't everything! I'm sure you can think of an entertaining guilty pleasure right now that has an awful story but boy is it fun and enjoyable...!

You overly nitpick at the political story but when you look at the simple side of The Host the story succeeds most in its dramatic scenes and family focus. Who really cares about all the "jabs" or political attacks on America, look at the dramatic story and enjoy it for its great visual scenes, out-of-the-ordinary monster presence (it's not supposed to scare you by being there in broad daylight, it's supposed to create tension and drama to further the story with the family).

Anyway, of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Keep up the great work and continue defending or attacking movies that you personally have a belief about - that's what's great about the internet!

If I had been grading on a five-star scale I would have probably given it two. There really are no charms to it and I only slightly touched upon the comedic techniques used, the funeral scene was ridiculous. Yeah, it is supposed to be funny, but it was so out of touch with the rest of the film and also took you out of the moment in which a little girl is dead. Therefore when we learn she is alive it doesn’t really matter since we made a joke out of her funeral in the first place. I just thought the film was a mess despite how great some pieces of it looked.

Brad,

I gave it 3.5 out of 5 at ScreenRant.com and while that's a good rating, it's not great. I, too, wondered about all the incredible praise being dumped on this movie and figured that maybe I just wasn't smart enough to get some of it's charms. :-)

While I agree with everything said about the film, I do think it does have a dramatic moment in a few parts. But, I agree. :)
