Side Effects
Side Effects on DVD Blu-ray today
Thanks to my visit to Cannes I no longer have to cite Side Effects as the only good movie of 2013 so far. In fact, once Friday rolls around another one of my favorite films of 2013 hits theaters in the form of Before Midnight.

However, back to Side Effects, a truly fantastic, smart and intriguing film from Steven Soderbergh. The disc arrived shortly before I had to leave for Cannes so I haven't had a chance to watch it again, but I did see it twice in theaters and will welcome another visit once I get back home.

True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season
True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season on DVD Blu-ray today
I started watching this right before I left for Cannes as well and actually took the DVD discs with me to Cannes, hoping I'd have some opportunity to watch at least a couple more episodes. No dice. I really enjoy the "True Blood" series for how outrageous and crazy it is. I'm not sure I'd call it "good", but I think something along the lines of "entertaining trash" seems to fit.

Cleopatra (50th Anniversary Edition)
Cleopatra (50th Anniversary Edition) on DVD Blu-ray today
I really like this movie and I love the story behind its making. I'm not sure if a review copy of this came to me or not seeing how I haven't been home for a while, but it's a title I'd entertain the thought of buying. I wrote about it back in 2011 when I saw it in 70mm at the Seattle Cinerama and it's actually playing here in Cannes in the Cannes Classics section. Unfortunately time doesn't allow us to watch four hour movies we've already seen while here in the Riviera.

Beautiful Creatures
Beautiful Creatures on DVD Blu-ray today
A solid little YA film that didn't get the attention it deserved. A thousand times better than anything in the Twilight franchise, but what can you do?

Stand Up Guys
Stand Up Guys on DVD Blu-ray today
I never saw this as it seemed like they were trying to position it for awards attention (most of it focusing on the original song by Bon Jovi) and forgot they also had to release the actual film. I haven't heard anything all that great about it so I never sought it out. Any of you see it?

Parker

Jason Statham is Parker and he does Statham-y things. You prepared?

I'll be giving Side Effects a rewatch before I decide whether or not to buy it.

I may buy Side Effects eventually. I iked Cleopatra when I watched it last week, but I don't plan on owning it.

Looks like I messed up my italics somehow. Ignore that.

Stand Up Guys... a movie worth avoiding Brad; it is lifeless.

Definitely going to rent Side Effects, been looking forward to watching it since it never played at the local cinema here.

After I saw it in the theater, I immediately thought 'I need to watch this again'!
I will probably stick to renting it for the rewatch.

Definitely renting Side Effects and Cleopatra. Haven't seen either of those.

I'm going to give Side Effects a rental and probably pick up Medium Cool at the next Criterion sale.

Picked up Beautiful Creatures this morning (I'm not ashamed by how much I enjoyed this movie) and will have to wait on Side Effects.

I've always viewed 'True Blood' as high quality trashy fun. I just don't see how it could be viewed any other way. But I thought Season 4 showed some signs of fatigue even with the multiple cliffhangers of the Season finale. I'll pick up Season 5 though sometime.

The rest would initially be rentals before looking at the option to buy.

I just downloaded "Side Effects" and will be watching it tonight. I'm so excited to finally check it out as it only played at my local theater for about a week and I couldn't see it.

So what criteria do you guys when deciding whether to buy a dvd? We have so many other options for watching and seeing films these days.
One thing I do miss though is special features. Id love to hear thoughts...

For me, any movie that gets a 4/5 or above is a buy. So, basically a film that really impressed me and that I would watch multiple times throughout the years. I'd say I typically buy 3-4 new releases a year. Last year those included Skyfall, Killer Joe, Killing Them Softly and Django Unchained. I'm also thinking about picking up Magic Mike when it goes on sale.

Thanks for your input AS. I loved Killing them Softly.
