Sources say the female lead will not be Mary Jane

Just to recap what we already know about the untitled Spider-Man reboot set for release on July 3, 2012; Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) will direct a high-school grounded story starring Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, Never Let Me Go) as Peter Parker and an allegedly "great" actor not named Christoph Waltz as an unknown villain.

In today's latest news, Heat Vision's Borys Kit brings us the short list of actresses who will play Parker's main love interest who, in another change-up from the Maguire-Dunst adaptations, will NOT be Mary Jane. It is unknown at this point whether the actresses are auditioning to play Gwen Stacy (Parker's first love in the comics) or some new character all together. Wikipedia tells me (Okay, I don't follow the comics… give me a break) Gwen Stacy is a "blonde college co-ed," so it's unclear to me how she would fit into a high-school Spider-Man story. I do know she was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3, but that doesn't exactly help us much.

Keeping consistent with the relatively low-key theme of the male short list, most of the actresses are up-and-comers, There are others in contention, but these are the ones revealed in the Heat Vision report:

Imogen PootsOphelia LovibondLilly Collins
(Solitary Man, 28 Weeks Later)(Nowhere Boy)(The Blind Side)
Teresa PalmerEmma RobertsMary Elizabeth Winstead
(The Sorcerer's Apprentice)(Valentine's Day)(Scott Pilgrim vs. The World)

Winstead was on the original list, but sources say she has already fallen out of the race, which interestingly enough makes Roberts the only American-born actress still in the running.

Poots is the one name that really jumps out at me as I was impressed with what she was able to do with a rather complex role in Solitary Man. She also has a more "original" and less traditional look to her than the other choices, which would give the movie a much-needed edge unless they are really pulling for that younger demographic. The rest of them, more or less, fall into that "cute" category for me.

That said, I fully expect Roberts to win the gig unless she is already considered too much of a star and her asking price has jumped past the modestly budgeted production's range. Garfield is reportedly getting just $500,000, whereas Maguire earned $4 million for the first Spider-Man film back in 2002.

The actresses will be meeting with Webb and Garfield over the weekend and another round of meetings could occur next weekend if necessary with shooting scheduled to begin in December.

I saw The Sorcerer's Apprentice a couple of days ago and I found Teresa Palmer to be quite charming.

Gwen Stacey was a classmate of Peter's from high school into college. Mary Jane from the films was sort of a combination of Gwen, whom Peter had known a long time, and Mary Jane, who was dumped onto Peter as a blind date (with the famous first words "Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot" upon appearing at Peter's door.) There was a kind of Betty / Veronica thing going with the nice girl blonde and the fiery redhead, but Gwen was his true love.

It was Gwen that the Green Goblin kidnapped and took to the top of the bridge, as in the final confrontation in the first movie. However, Gwen died during the fight when the Goblin threw her off the bridge and Peter's webbing snapped her neck when he tried to catch her. It was highly shocking at the time for a major love interest to be killed off… it would have been much like killing Lois Lane.

Teresa Palmer as Gwen Stacey and Emma Roberts as Mary Jane

    Teresa Palmer or Emma Roberts

  5. I'm glad you singled out Poots a bit, because I agree about her work in "Solitary Man." She really lit up the screen, and I wish she would have had some more time on it.

What about Dianna Agron? I think she should be the perfect Gwen Stacy… I still hope this happens.

Palmer needs this more, I see potential in her. She's been in 2 kid movies (all from Disney), and that Justice League movie isn't getting any progress.

  8. Teresa Palmer as Gwen Stacey. Lily Collins or Emma Roberts as Mary Jane. I've seen all Teresa Palmer movies (The Grudge 2, Bedtime Stories & The Sorcerer's Apprentice) and she definitely has all the looks as Gwen Stacey.

Emma Roberts, i've seen all her of movies so far and she would be a perfect Mary Jane. I've only seen Collins once in The Blind Side but she's out-freaking gorgeous, also would make a great Mary Jane.

  9. Ophelia Lovibond Fan

rumors says its Ophelia Lovibond hope its true…

I honestly think they should choose between either Ophelia Lovibond, Teresa Palmer, or Emma Roberts. However, I honestly and seriously think that only Ophelia Lovibond will be the only one that would be awesome as Peter's love interest. I mean think about it. Ophelia is extremely hot. No joke. Spider-Man is my number one favorite superhero, Iron Man is my second favorite superhero, and I don't know my third one yet.

  11. mary elizabeth winstead should play mary jane in spider-man reboot
