'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel Preps With Pitt's Involvement Still Rumored
Those Brad Pitt as Moriarty rumors persist
Steven Zeitchik and Jay A. Fernandez at The Risky Biz Blog are reporting those Brad Pitt rumors regarding the upcoming Sherlock Holmes may have had some merit, just not for the upcoming Sherlock as word of a sequel is afoot three months in advance of the first installment's theatrical debut.
Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who are apparently still working on a script for the floundering Justice League: Mortal feature, are set to begin drafting a script for Sherlock Holmes 2 and Brad Pitt has reportedly had discussions with producers to star as Holmes' nemesis Moriarty in the new pic, though there is no deal in place for him to take the part. Pitt's involvement as Moriarty in the first film has been discussed often, but word is the character only shows up in the shadows in the script.
By no means would I consider this a definite go for the studio, but unless Sherlock fails to catch on with audiences at all I think it is highly unlikely Warner Bros. isn't looking at this with a massive franchise potential.
Sherlock Holmes is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr. as the title character, Jude Law as Watson, Mark Strong as the villainous Blackwood and Rachel McAdams as Adler. Based on the trailers it looks like a Pirates of the Caribbean-esque actioner with a detective novel slant told through the flash-bang direction of Ritchie. In my book that's a win, not sure about you.
The film is due out on December 25, the trailer is attached to this post.

I truly hope the Brad Pitt rumor is bogus. He's not needed in this. Perhaps Gary Oldman? Or Russell Crowe? But not Brad….pleeeease, not Brad. Sorry, but that would cheapen it.
I liked it back in the good ol' days where… y'know… you had to earn a sequel with the quality, financial or critical… or both, of the original.
wow they have high hopes from this franchise, quite frankly im not impressed from the trailer, talks of sequels before the release of the first movie are a bit premature imo, i mean this is no lord of the rings or harry potter.
@sheryl:
why don't you think Brad Pitt is a genuinly good actor to be stood along-side Robert Downey Jr? If you think Brad Pitt cheapens films then you go watch 12 Monkeys and Kalifornia… especially Kalifornia… that dude can really act!
… and Russel Crowe? noooooo that's a bad idea for any movie whatsoever.
Brad Pitt as a villain… hmm. I don't know. The only time I've liked him playing a villain is in The Assassination of Jesse James.
Everyone is forgetting about fight club. That movie was released in 99 and I still to this day hear people saying "the first rule" used in a joke sense. Brad Pitt in that movie played his part very well. He was the bad guy… minus spoiling the movie. If he is cast as Moriarty, I'm sure he will surprise people.
