Shatner Talks 'Star Trek XI'
So it will be an early Kirk and Spock story?
Well, my hopes for Star Trek XI being any good took a drastic hit today as William Shatner, in an interview with SCI FI Wire said that the "11th Star Trek movie will indeed, as rumored, deal with the early years of Capt. James T. Kirk and Spockāand that he will definitely appear in the movie if director J.J. Abrams can find a place to use him."
I don't mind if Shatner makes a cameo, but a prequel story is entirely unnecessary and until I learn more it remains uninteresting.
Shatner said, "I met with J.J., and they told me they would like me to be part of their film, but they have to write the role." The idea of a young Kirk story is nothing new to Shatner as he reveals he has already submit a book to the publishers based on the early days in the Starfleet, "We've submitted the first book to the publishers, and I think it will be out in the beginning of 2008. It's got a working title of The Academy, but I don't think that will stick."
Lately the rumor has surrounded Matt Damon playing the young Kirk and I even heard another rumor saying that Daniel Craig was in the running. As for Shatner's part in it all he said, "They need to figure out how to put the dead captain in with the young captain… It's a very complex, technical problem of how to write the character in, and I'm not sure how they will solve it."
If Shatner plays anything other than an older Kirk, who we all know died in Generations it will be extremely cheesy, but who knows.

Gotta admit, as a longtime fan of the Star Trek series (film and television) I wasn't really thrilled when I heard the rumors that the 11th film in the series would be a prequel. After George Lucas stumbled his way through the new Star Wars films, I'm not really confident in the ability of prequels to equal their predecessors. However, Batman Begins was a prequel and it set the new standard for all future flicks about the Dark Knight. Casino Royale is about the 'young' James Bond and it (in my humble opinion) was the best Bond-Film I've ever seen. Can a young Kirk/Spock story work……I think it is possible — If written and cast well.
J.J. Abrams is a very accomplished filmmaker, you can bet this new installment of Star Trek is in good hands. After the (again, in my humble opinion) abysmal Enterprise television series and the lackluster Star Trek Nemesis, its time that the series got a completely new makeover; lets just hope J.J. is the man to do it. Oh, one more thing: not so sure about Matt Damon as Captain Kirk?
Star Wars proved that while prequels make money they are no good. I also don't think there is enough history told in Star Trek episodes and movies to warrant a prequel, I just can't think of anything that would be all that interesting as opposed to just a generic, "In the Beginning" story. Why take the risk with that?
I have confidence in Abrams, I like what he does, but this one I am just not sure about.
As for the mention of Bond and Batman, I don't really consider Batman a prequel in as much as I consider it a brand new franchise. I almost feel the same way about Casino Royale.
As for Damon as Kirk, I don't think anyone should be playing Kirk so it is going to be hard to impress me on that one.
