Sequel Update Including 'G.I. Joe 2,' 'Star Trek 2,' 'Wolverine 2,' 'Sherlock 2' and 'Fast and Furious'
Plus Transformers 3 and Twilight's Breaking Dawn
As big as the box-office haul will be for the six seven eight (sorry the list actually grew as I was writing this) films listed in the headline, this is going to be a rather short update on a per-film basis, but I guess that is all relative to how much information you think there should be.
I guess we'll start with the first one and move on from there beginning with news Paramount is moving forward with a proposed G.I. Joe 2 as they are bringing in Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the script. Rheese and Wernick were also recently commissioned to write 20th Century Fox's Deadpool a spin-off of Ryan Reynold's character from 2009's Wolverine. The Stephen Sommers-directed G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra made over $300 million worldwide despite plenty of negative reviews.
In the same Variety article we also learn Paramount has set a date for Star Trek 2 (or 12 depending on how you look at it), setting a June 29, 2012 date for the Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof script. Star Trek director J.J. Abrams is already set to produce, but has yet to sign a deal to direct.
Over at MTV we move to the world of Wolverine as they report Wolverine 2 may begin shooting in 2011. Star Hugh Jackman told the site, "Wolverine's going to be back. He's going to Japan. We shoot that probably in a year, year-and-a-half, something like that."
Word has it the sequel will be based upon the classic Chris Claremont and Frank Miller "Wolverine" story (buy that here) that finds Logan facing off against a Japanese crime lord and falling for his daughter, Mariko. Valkyrie scripter Christopher McQuarrie (also co-writer of Bryan Singer's first X-Men) signed on to pen the sequel back in August 2009. A director has not yet been named. Bryan Singer, as we recently learned, is aboard to direct X-Men: First Class for Fox.
Next comes the shortest bit of news as Mike Fleming at Deadline.com says Michael Bay's Transformers 3 will likely go into production in May of this year for its July 1, 2011 release.
Vin Diesel is keeping his fans updated on his Facebook page recently dropping news of a Fast and Furious 5 and 6 posting the following message:
"I have never been submitted a two story saga from a studio before…it is very exciting and shows a commitment level that is hard not to respond to. Excited about the sexy locations the filming of this saga would take us…this novel-like story, that has twists and unexpected turns that is authentic, truthful and challenging to the characters."
I, for one, had fun with 2009's Fast and Furious and would like some more.
What would a sequel update be without news from the Twilight front? News recently involves the weird and wacky sounding fourth installment in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" franchise, Breaking Dawn in which Jacob the werewolf falls in love with imprints on(?) Bella and Edward's baby after they have headboard smashing sex. It will be epic and producer Wyck Godfrey told the Los Angeles Times the film is set to go ahead this fall in Vancouver with Melissa Rosenberg currently penning the script. Plans for the accelerated aging of Bella and Edward's baby, Renesmee, expected to be handled using plenty of CG effects. As for the chatter of the fourth book being broken into two films, Meyer offers her own thoughts on the matter saying:
Just a quick note on the subject of the Breaking Dawn film: there is no drama over whether the book should be one movie or two. My personal feeling is that it would be very difficult to cram the whole story into one movie (as I've said in many interviews previous to this), but if a great way of doing that surfaces, I'm all for it. Two or one, whichever way fits the story best is fine by me, and everyone I've spoken with at Summit seems to feel the same way. We're all excited to move forward on this, and we are slowly and surely getting there. I know people are anxious for news, and so sometimes gossip gets fabricated to stir things up, but there's no basis to this particular story.
Finally, Entertainment Weekly brings word from an insider telling them Robert Downey Jr. has decided against starring in Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens due to a scheduling conflict with Sherlock Holmes 2, which EW has heard has been fast-tracked based on the success of the first film for a June start date with a script commissioned back in September from Kieran and Michele Mulroney already written. Guy Ritchie is expected to once again direct with Downey Jr. and Jude Law returning as Sherlock and Watson respectively.

Yay SHERLOCK 2 more Jude Law Dr.Watson !
Sequels basically suck thin air but money is a motivation that is difficult to shrug off. When the $ fills the eyes you can´t see anything else. So on a business level this is quite understanding. Everyone loves success. Everyone loves money. But of all the sequels you mention there is only one I´m personally interested in, and really only marginally: Sherlock 2 sounds like a knockout. Silly space-scifi operas don´t interest me in the least.
Yay for "Sherlock", "Star Trek" and even "Fast & Furious" (my guilty pleasure franchise).
I think people already know my opinion on "Twilight" (hint: It's horribly awesome).
I enjoyed "GI Joe" and "Wolverine" for what they were- dumb, loud, noisy but fun action movies. I'm more looking forward to what can be done with GI Joe than with "Wolverine", mostly because the latter film was ridiculously inessential and unnecessary, but if anything they should bring back the previous director for "Wolverine 2". The direction was not the problem with that film.
Let me repeat that.
THE DIRECTION WAS NOT THE PROBLEM OF "Wolverine".
I gotta say after a long time I feel a movie needs/deserves to have a sequel; Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes
Dude, seriously… how the fuck would it be hard to fit "Breaking Dawn" into one movie? They did it with Harry Potter 5, they can do it twice (thrice) as easily with Breaking Dawn. There is not much substance to Meyer's story, unlike Harry Potter, so squeezing 700 pages into 2 hours is not difficult in this case. And I'm saying this as someone who's read all four books and knows what I'm talking about.
Excited for all of these except T3. I am tired of Bay and his plotless movies.
I remember reading the ninja clan version comic book as a kid, good stuff. Hope it does not turn out as cheesy as the first. A gritty dark look is essential much like TDK, which I had hoped would have been initially introduced in this individual series.
Even G.I. Joe could've been 100x better (weaponizing the warheads was retarded), I am interested in a sequel since the whole first movie was basically a dumb "origin story"(which always suck nobody cares about the origins!). This movie may actually be G.I. Joe. Well, about as much as Charlies Angels Full Throttle was charlies angels as opposed to the first one which had nothing to do with Charlies Angels.
@mfan:
. I've read "New Moon", which is a long, plodding book with many, many long stretches of "inaction", and while the film condensed most of that, the pacing was way off, to the point where it almost felt like a chore watching the movie. "Breaking Dawn" is a book that, while ridiculous, is pretty simple plot-wise. So the fact that the story was drawn out over 700 pages baffles me. I guess if they want to tie up all loose ends (OMG WHAT HAPPENS WITH MIKE AND JESSICA), they could stretch it out to two different films, but it just smells like "cash-in".
But that's just me. We'll probably have to agree to disagree mfan, and I'm totally ok with that. I respect your opinion.
It is a cash in. They want to stretch the movie franchise out for as long as possible. Just like with Potter they haven't found anything to replace this cash cow with.
sorry I but the letters in backwards that should be MJ, not jm
only star trek should have a sequel, the rest of these are trash, o and dont forget the AVATAR sequel
@Vince (Not Vance): Truthfully, I just don't like people criticizing the movies of fans, because I always feel I am about to be next. It doesn't sound like JM is worried about the integrity of the series, to me. That would be a legitimate criticizism, if one is worried about the future of the franchise. But, especially if it's slated to be the last movie in a franchise, why should he care if they drag it out? If he is a fan, shouldn't he want more screen time for his favorite actors? And if he is not a fan, why is it his concern?
@mfan:
Eh, I don't want to get too off topic here, but I think the thing about "Twilight" that irks people is not the films/books themselves (take em or leave em, you either like them or you don't), it's how passionate some fans can be. Those die-hards rub non-fans the wrong way, especially when arguments amount to "IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DON'T WATCH IT", even when people might be making legitimate claims on how they don't like the movie (I've experienced this first hand).
I'm a fan of the "Twilight" movies, believe it or not (though maybe not in the same way that you might be). I just think that stretching the plot over 2 movies might be a bit much. I don't doubt that they could fit "Breaking Dawn" in one 2+ hour movie, and that should be enough. Every film has dead parts, but the best films are the ones that deftly pace the stories so that there's a lack of filler.
I'm happy about the sequel to Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek. Not so happy about Transformers 3 and the possibility of Breaking Dawn being broken into two movies. Get these damn Twilight movies over with already!
I swear to god, the endless amount of sequels, which tie actors up in contracts for years that prevent them from doing other cool flicks, are going to ruin Hollywood.
i know this is somewhat off topic, but the way you morphed vin diesel and chris pine's eye on the main page is disturbing lol
They should have made the Twilight movies longer like they did Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. They left out too much important detail in the first one, never really building up the relationship between Bella and Edward. Anyone who's read the books knows what I'm talking about. If they break up the last one into 2 movies then maybe they will do a better job. I sure hope they change the ending though or it's gonna suck.
GI Joe 2? I won't even rent it. I didn't like the first but oh well.
Surprised that Hugh Jackman is making a Wolverine 2 but he wouldn't do another XMen? I had read that he wasn't going to do another wolverine role after the solo movie. I would love to see more of XMen. Wolverine was OK but I just didn't care for the story so much and you hardly got to see enough of the other mutants. I loved Gambit, he was awesome! Hope the second installment is better.
@Brad Brevet: Yes, Brad it's Star Trek XII. There will always be ONE Star Trek II and it's The Wrath of Khan.
G.I. Joe:
NO JOE!! We don't need another one of these cheesy films.
Wolverine:
Meh. Perhaps they can make me care about my favorite X-Man once more….but I doubt it.
Star Trek XII: I'm so excited about this film. I will be counting down the 900-some-odd days until the release of this film. JJ Abrams has made this jaded Star Trek fan very happy, despite the fact that I feel dirty enjoying the new Captain Kirk so much. What a year 2012 is shaping up to be:
Star Trek XII
The Hobbit: Part II
Spider-Man IV (presumeably)
Iron Man 3 (presumeably)
AVATAR 2 (I'm hoping beyond all hope for one to be announced)
Oh, and the world will end in December (according to the Mayans anyway)
I find it funny people are bashing Michael Bay for his lack of a story or plot in Transformers and applauding Avatar so much. The story in Avatar was recycled at best. No one who saw Avatar came out of it saying "Wow that was such a riveting story!" People saw and liked Transformers for the same reasons they saw and liked Avatar. Michael Bay is not going to stop making films and studios would be retarded not to hire him. He is box office, not to mention DVD, gold.
I can only hope the Tribbles finally get their due in the next Star Trek movie. J.J. can make it work.
@ #10
An Avatar sequel is, unfortunately, inevitable. If millions of people can be tricked into ignoring a terribly derivative script filled with flat characters because there were floating 3-D jellyfish, then you can bet it'll happen all over again.
Ok, well, I am seeing a lot of people talking about the sequels and I think that if given the right frame and story, they should all be good.. I always give the movies that one chance, even if it is a sequel.
Now on to my main comment. I would love to see the sequel to Avatar. And it has already been spoken about being done, just not an exact date as of yet. However, the story line/plot has already been done. Avatar was a great film, please dont get me wrong. And the co-existence of real time and CG was great. However, the story line/plot has already been done in Battle For Terra. Not in the exact same way (and it was all CG) but so close it is not funny. If you have seen it, re-watch it, if you have not seen it, watch it. You will understand what I am talking about within the first 20 min of starting the movie.
In all seriousness I've found the Twilight saga to be the most
Ridiculous, pathetic excuse for a set of movies in the annals of
Hollywood history. It should have been a soap because that's about
all it amounted to and a poor one at that. Unless you're a 12 year
old girl swooning over which one is hotter (wolf or vampire)…
the movies will put you to sleep and leave you with a bit of vomit
In the back of your throat! Whatever happened to great vampire
movies like 'From Dusk 'til Dawn' or 'Interview with a Vampire'
As well as 'Queen of the Damned' and the fuckload of Anne Rice
vampire novels that should have hit the big screen? T3 will
(While the action is enjoyable but confusing) sadly probably cause
25% of the audience epileptic seizures due to the confusing action
sequences we saw in T2…
Only movies in the list I'll watch is Star Trek 2 and Wolverine 2.
