Jim Carrey (Curly), Benicio Del Toro (Moe) and Sean Penn (Larry)

I honestly cannot believe they pulled this off, but Variety is reporting the Farrelly brothers have landed Sean Penn (Larry), Jim Carrey (Curly) and Benicio Del Toro (Moe) as the leads in their Three Stooges film.

I am not saying this isn't a great bit of casting news for a film I have no interest in. In fact this gives me reason to actually be mildly interested and I can't remember the last time Penn starred in a comedy. Sure, he had his episodes on "Friends" in 2001, but I think 1999's Sweet and Lowdown was the last time Penn cracked a joke and that was a Woody Allen film I have not yet seen yet.

Production on The Three Stooges will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010 and apparently not the currently slated November 20, 2009 date. The Farrellys, who wrote the script, are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas, and Charlie Wessler.

Oh, and tell me I didn't do a pretty damn good job manipulating that image above. *pats self on back*

Whoa, why are the Farrellys doing this to us?

Who would have thought this would be the film to unite Del Toro and Penn after 21 Grams? Guess even oscar winners need to pay rent.

  3. This is gonna be a 'belly laugh' film when this hits – I can just smell it!. Jim Carrey – FUNNY! BDT – FUNNY AS HELL!!!! Check him out in The Usual Suspects…..Sean Penn…hmmmmm….i'd say he has the propensity to be funny. A beautiful blend.

Cant wait! I'm already holding my sides!

This could end up being disastrous or pretty good. I am most surprised that Sean Penn agreed to be in it. This is probably his first comedic role since Spicoli.

  5. Brad, your diabolical morphing of Curly and Jim Carrey has accidentally spawned a Luke Wilson clone. This is the kind of thing that freaks me right out about stem cell research

@Ryan Adams: I will admit, I was shocked at how well that particular part of the image turned out. The other two look like Photoshopped images but the Carrey face is eerily realistic.

@Chris: I agree, this film could end up being a resounding dud at the box office; however, I must admit, this film looks really interesting.

Of course Jim Carrey will be more than up to the task of portraying one of histories great physical comedians. I'm not so sure about Sean Penn, but after seeing his Oscar-winning performance in Milk, maybe…just maybe…he can pull it off.

Surprisingly, I really have a lot of faith in Del Toro's comedic potential. His off-the-wall performances in The Usual Suspects & Snatch proved that he is more than capable of portraying unique-yet-zany characters. I will be watching this film closely – just hoping it's more of a serious film than the Farrelly's usual brand of humor.

This looks so damn creepy!!! This is some crazy bleeping casting! Not as eclectic as "Repo! The Genetic Opera," but it certainly tries to touch it.

For some reason I see Penn leaving this project in the near future. Hist face morphed onto Larry's actually makes him look like the right guy for the part; on looks alone that is lol. Would be interesting if he actually did this.

I did not see Carrey coming as Curley; I saw Rogan or another chubbier actor in the role. Carrey will do nicely though. Looks aside, that's a role made for him haha.

Del Toro as Moe is a great choice in my opinion.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if each of these three eventually walk; even Carrey. But I'm predicting that it'll be someone else as Larry, despite what Variety is saying.

What about "I Am Sam"? :P

I think Benicio Del Toro will make a great, abusive Moe. I can see it already. It's understandable to be skeptical as he's never done a comedy, but I think he will pull it off. THe guy is extremely gifted

All I have to do is think of Del Toro in Fear and Loathing and I'm confident he'll be great as Moe. And Penn as Larry? Hell yeah, that's a stroke of genius, actually.

I'm most worried about Carrey overdoing it, actually. Sometimes that guy doesn't know when to let up.

  13. Jim Carrey is perfect as Curly but i don't know about the other two

I think it should be like this

    Steve Carell – Moe Howard
    Mike Myers – Larry Fine
    Jim Carrey – Curly Howard
