Sam Worthington replaces Tom Cruise in 'The Tourist'
The upcoming actor's star continues to rise
Jay A. Fernandez at The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Charlize Theron and Sam Worthington have been confirmed and will star in the thriller The Tourist for Spyglass Entertainment for director Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day).
The remake of the 2005 French spy thriller was penned by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor) with a recent rewrite turned in by Valkyrie scribe Christopher McQuarrie. In the film Theron will play a female Interpol agent who uses an American tourist (Worthington) in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.
Theron had long been attached to the project which is now expected to begin filming January 2010. Cruise dropped off the film when he signed on to star in Wichita with Cameron Diaz for director James Mangold this year for summer 2010 release. Wichita is an action-comedy for 20th Century Fox in which an undercover agent (Cruise) gets thrown together with a woman (Diaz) who has man trouble.
Worthington is proving to be a hot commodity as of late after starring in Terminator Salvation, a starring role in James Cameron's upcoming Avatar, a starring role in the Warner Bros. remake Clash of the Titans as well as Last Night opposite Keira Knightley for Miramax.

Great news. I'm a big Sam Worthington fan.
I dont know whether to be happy that Worthington is in another film, or sad that Cruise is in one less film. I enjoy them both so the news comes as biter-sweet.
this is sweet news:D
if he wants to play an american tourist, then he should start working on his american accent right away, his accent was all over the place in TS.
Ugh. I'm not so sure what all the Worthington fuss is about. He was listless and boring in Terminator Salvation.
while I am sad that tom cruise isn't going to be in this (cruise pulled a fantastic comeback last year), worthington may be cool. Although I admit I haven't seen terminator or anything else he's done save for "rogue". Either way, mcquarrie writing has my interest.
I have to agree with the critics who thought that Sam Worthington stole the film from
Christian Bale, he has a lot of presence on screen and has that "it" factor. Loved him in Somersault and can't wait to see him in Avatar.
@sarah:
sam's character was more intruiging and had better dialogue, thats why bale's performace felt flat in comparison, just like bale's character in prestige was more intresting that jackman's.
