Three TV Spots from Johnny Depp's 'The Rum Diary'
Mind bending passion...
I really can't see how Johnny Depp's The Rum Diary can be anything more than an absolute hit or an absolute failure. I can't help but predict it will divide audiences straight down the middle with very few straddling the line.
Based on Hunter S. Thompson's first novel, the film features Depp as Paul Kemp, a roaming journalist who travels to Puerto Rico to work for the San Juan Star, and soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), a wildly attractive fiancee of shady local businessman Hal Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). The Rum Diary also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rispoli and Richard Jenkins.
The film hits limited theaters on October 28 courtesy of FilmDistrict and over the weekend I added three TV spots to the site, which I have now included directly below. Give 'em a watch and see what you think. Will you be seeking out the Bruce Robinson-directed feature wherever it plays or are you uninterested in what it offers?
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.

I would follow a Bruce Robinson and Johnny Depp team up anywhere. The fact that Hunter S. Thompson is in the mix is just a pleasant bonus for me.
I'll be there opening day, but Depp called it "a special little film," not a blockbuster, so I think they're aware it's probably not going to rake in big bucks. That doesn't make it a failure.
I remember when it was being filmed down here, Deep was great to the locals.
Has anyone besides me actually read this novel? It's a superficial piece of crap and there was a reason it was forgotten for so long.
