ROUND 2: You Vote for the Best Films of 2009
And the beat goes on as 53 films move on
Okay, so the first round went moderately well, even though some voters tried to game the system by not following the rules and not voting for the full five films. Fortunately I caught the problem and was able to fix it in time to get as accurate a result as we could expect. No problem though, things go wrong the first time around and you learn from it.
Ultimately, of the 1,319 voters, I was able to correct the system so every single vote was by someone that voted for at least four films. This resulted in 53 films being carried over into this second round as four films tied for the 50th spot. Inglourious Basterds and Avatar are the clear-cut front-runners moving into this round taking the top two spots in the first poll followed by Up, The Hurt Locker and Up In the Air for the top five spots with blockbusters such as Star Trek, District 9 and The Hangover not far behind.
So today we begin Round 2 with one more round to follow after this. However, things are changing as we move into the this round and I try to get a hang of this thing. Here are the rules this time around:
- You must vote for no fewer than eight films and can vote for no more than ten.
- Voting for fewer than eight films will result in having your votes deleted. No exceptions.
- Voting will be left open through Sunday, January 3.
With that said, I give you the remaining 53 films. Vote for your favorite ten from the bunch and if you have a Facebook or Twitter account be sure to share with others. It would be great to get the widest range of opinions possible. Now get to voting!

I like this concept a lot. Well done. I'm glad we have an option of voting for 10 movies now.
Kind of sad to see that The Brothers Bloom didn't make it to the second round, especially considering some of the movies that did.
It's kind of sad Bad Lieutenant didn't make it either. That's in my Top 10 of '09.
no I Love You, Man on here but Gamer is? And yeah Bad Lieutenant was an incredible film, one of Nic Cage's best performances.
@Matt and @goavs: Yeah, I knew when I saw Bad Lieutenant not make it a few people would be upset. It wasn't a favorite of mine, but I know quite a few liked it.
inglourious basterds looks like its already won
Oh come on, In the Loop people!
Duplicity and State of Play aren't on here?
I heard that Gerard Butler loved Fantastic Mr.Fox. And, I imagine, he holds a special place in his heart for any lady that might also enjoy Fantastic Mr.Fox.
I haven't seen Sherlock Holmes yet, so i'm going to wait until I make up my mind!
AVATAR PEOPLE!!!!!!!
Well, as of today, I've added Up In The Air, Broken Embraces, An Education, Invictus & Nine to my award-season list. I caught screenings of each of these films over the past couple of days. Alas, while it was a brilliant film with an award-caliber performance by Penelope Cruz, Broken Embraces will have to resign itself to a Best Foreign Language Film nomination. Invictus is good, but not quite good enough to make the Top-10 List. As for Nine, I enjoyed two songs from the film and most of Daniel Day-Lewis' performance; however, the rest of the film was hit or miss.
However, Up In The Air and An Education have moved their way onto my list…they were both fantastic films with moving scripts and great performances. My apologies to Michael Jackson; here is my list:
1. Avatar
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. Up In The Air
4. (500) Days Of Summer
5. Up
6. Star Trek
7. An Education
8. Precious
9. The Hangover
10. Watchmen
I still need to catch A Serious Man, A Single Man, Crazy Heart, The Last Station,
A Prophet, The White Ribbon and a couple more before I can make my final assessment (hopefully, I can nail down at least of few of these before the January 3rd deadline).
Well, seeing as at least 5 of my favorite films didn't make it (9, Bad Lieutenant, Doctor Parnassus, Cirque Du Freak, Year One) let's see my new list
1.Star Trek
2.Sherlock Holmes
3.Public Enemies
4.Gamer
5.Watchmen
6.GI JOE: The Rise Of Cobra
7.This Is It
8.The Hangover
9.Up In The Air
10.2012
I have yet to Avatar, Inglourious Basterds or Away We Go but i heard they are very creative.
Gamer was good, but it wasn't necessary to spam it into the 10 50. I dislike people like that. films like Year One, 9 or The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus could have filled those spots. and New Moon? come on, it was horrid
movies like The Lovely Bones and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus don't get a fair shake here since neither has had a wide release yet. I usually don't put together my best of list until late January/early February because that's usually how long it is before I get to see everything.
I think smaller films like The White Ribbon and A Prophet won't make it through because most people haven't seen them. Also, even though I wasn't expecting them to make it, the lack of That Evening Sun and The Cove is disappointing.
Oscars have given Best Picture to the biggest movie of the year in the past.
In 1994, Forrest Gump took in $680 million globally and won 6 Oscars (out of 13 nominations) including Best Picture.
In 1997, Titanic took $1.8 billion globally and won 11 Oscars (out of 14 nominations) including Best Picture.
In 2003, LOTR: Return of the King took $1.2 billion and won 11 Oscars (out of 11 nominations) including Best Picture.
My Best Picture Noms Would be:
District 9- That was amazing
Avatar- One of the best of '09
Inglourious Basterds- I haven't seen it but many people think it was really really good
This Is It- Such a good movie
The Road- Really great movie
Those are all i can think of. Avatar should be in there because the so-called "oscar gobblers" like Nine are getting bad reviews.

The Ugly Truth was #2 and Law Abiding Citizen was #1 this year. There were
definitely some very good movies, but these two were exceptional.

@R.M. Hinkson:
Actually, I would tie Up with Zombieland for #5.
Moved by the spamming efforts of the Gerard Butler fans, I saw Law Abiding Citizen last night at the $1 theatre. What a piece of shit! You guys can do better than that!
I have just thought about something.
Ever since 1944, when All Quiet on the Western Front won Best Picture, a lot of Best Picture nominees (including Laurence of Arabia) were set during the First World War.
Ever since 1958, when Bridge on River Kwai won Best Picture, a lot of of Best Picture nominees (including Schindler's List) were set during the Second World War.
Ever since 1970, when Patton won Best Picture (despite competition from the big screen version of M.A.S.H), a lot of Best Picture nominees (including The Deer Hunter)were set during the Vietnam War.
If The Hurt Locker wins in 2010, which is probable, should we expect at least 10 other Best Picture nominees, within the next 10 years, set during the Gulf War ?
I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but where is "Knowing"? If you're going to put "Angels & Demons" and "Sherlock Holmes" on this list, you might as well put on "Knowing" which is just as good (if not better) than both of those.
Sadly, I haven't seen enough of the hyped movies this year. I haven't even had the chance to see "Avatar" yet, much less "Invictus", "Nine", and "Up in the Air".
@Kevin Klaw: That's what "Round 2" means. The films you are asking about were eliminated in Round 1. Please read the article before throwing stones.
@Brad Brevet:
Hey, I wasn't here for round 1. Give me a break.
Looking back on the results… Jesus. Over twice as many people thought "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" was a better film than "Knowing"? and "Me and Orson Welles" only got 2 votes? Lordy.
Hannah Montana: The Movie was the best movie of the year!…but the acting was better in An Education, the directing was better in Inglorious Basterds, The Blind Side was more inspirational. I would totally give the Oscar to The Road except the setting of the movie didn't really contribute to it's themes. Some people think the setting was an end to itself like the special effects in Avatar, but I reject that thinking.
I voted for Avatar, Up, Star Trek, Watchmen, Where the Wild Things Are, Coraline, Taken, 2012, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The funny thing is Avatar, Up, and Star Trek are all three in a row at the top, so 3 of the films i voted for where from the top 5.
@Sandy: WHAT????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Ugly Truth was TERRIBLE!
VOTE FOR AVATAR AND THE HURT LOCKER!!!!!!!!!!! Inglorious Basterds is honestly overrated in my opinion!
Hey, my list is 90% in line with the others' choices (darn yous people who found themselves disenchanted with Rorschach & the other "Watchmen"!)
Okay my comments keep getting deleted and i checked them all and they didn't say anything rude or offensive and it wasn't an attack on the author so why do they keep getting deleted?!
