Rotten Tomatoes Lists the Top 50 Animated Films
I can't say I agree with the results, but they are indisputable

Yesterday I received the new Sleeping Beauty (2-Disc Platinum Edition) DVD and I expect the Blu-ray Disc to be in my mailbox soon. In the meantime we had some great animation this summer in WALL•E and Kung Fu Panda and we have Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Bolt and The Tale of Despereaux to look forward to, but RottenTomatoes is looking backward at the moment and brings us a Top 50 list of the best reviewed animated films. Their intro reads as:
Since the earliest days of cinema, animated films have constantly evolved, drawing audiences of all ages looking for a new perspective on the world in which we live. Here at RT, we’ve dug deep to bring you our countdown of the best-reviewed animated films of all time. Like the world of animation itself, our list is wonderfully diverse: we’ve got Disney classics (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), dreamlike anime (Spirited Away), blissful stop-motion (Chicken Run), gleefully surreal foreign entries (The Triplets of Belleville), and of course, CGI from the mighty Pixar Studios (Toy Story). In short, we’ve got something for everyone: kids, grownups, fanboys, and arthouse types.
Before you start raising hackles about the fact that, say, The Secret of NIMH isn't represented here, allow us a second to explain our parameters. Each of the films presented here has at least 20 reviews in order to maintain a measure of critical weight. We also omitted such classics as How the Grinch Stole Christmas that were made for television.
Just so you are clear, their list is made based on reviews, not the opinion of the RT editors. There is actually little to no editorial opinion in the piece as they let the reviews speak for themselves. The top ten goes as such:
- Toy Story 2 (1999)
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
- Pinocchio (1940)
- Toy Story (1995)
- WALL•E (2008)
- Finding Nemo (2003)
- Fantasia (1940)
- Chicken Run (2000)
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Personally I was shocked by the films in the top ten. Certainly I like some of those films but several of them wouldn't even be in my top 50. I know many people like The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I personally can't stay awake through the first 30 minutes (not an exaggeration) and I would never wish to see Fantasia again and Toy Story 2 being considered better than the first is just flat out wrong. Of course, the numbers don't lie. This is how the critical community weighed in.
I haven't thought about it long enough to decide what my ten favorite animated films would be but here is a list I would consider:
- Robin Hood (1973)
- The Lion King (1994)
- The Sword in the Stone (1963)
- Ratatouille (2007)
- Toy Story (1995)
- Aladdin (1992)
- WALL•E (2008)
- The Incredibles (2004)
- Shrek (2001)
- Howl's Moving Castle (2005)
- The Jungle Book (1967)
That's ten off the top of my head and I still want to see Spirited Away, Akira and Princess Monoke. I may also consider The Iron Giant, but I would have to see it again to be sure. No matter what, I think Robin Hood would end up my personal all-time #1 animated film.

I'm a little disappointed that Anastasia (1997) didn't make the list and my not-so favorite Disney movie Mulan (1998) is.
It's definitely disappointing.
what a big dissapointment.. how do you put chicken run on the top 10 it should be like in the last 10 rank in the world of animated movies. it was a dreadful movie
well im definatly making my list right now for top ten lol i have to the list that is up there is terrible :
1. The Lion King
2. Wall-E
3. Fox and the Hound
4. Beauty and The Beast
5. Robin Hood
6. The Iron Giant
7. Ratatouille
8. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs
9. Toy Story
10. Shrek
. Thats just my opinion . i love the classics but i have to give mad cred to wall-e for completly blowing my mind.
just to make it clear the terrible list is RT's not brads :)
Wow, I actually found this more difficult to narrow down than most other categories.
Here's my shot at what I consider my favorites, my top ten, animated films:
I still haven't seen WALL*E, so according to reviews and recommendations it will probably knock one off my top ten.
Always a pleasure…
My favorite animated movie ever has always been and will always be:
1. Sleeping Beauty
Runner ups
2. The Lion King
3. 101 Dalmations
4. Aladdin
5. Beauty and the Beast
6. The Little Mermaid
7. Lady and the Tramp
8. Mulan
9. Tarzan
10. The Emperor's New Groove
Toy Story 2 is way good, but seriously The Nightmare Before Christmas? Its just ok, nothing groundbreaking. But here are my top ten animated films.
1. Ratatouille
2. The Incredibles
3. Shrek
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. The Lion King
6. Finding Nemo
7. Toy Story 2
8. Kung Fu Panda
9. Sleeping Beauty
10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
I don't think that anything that was animated with xerox should be in the top ten. The lines are not crisp, and it is sloppy animation.
Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia (for being cutting edge for it's time),
Then just to be a contrarian, Toy Story, and just about anything Nick Parks does, Incredibles, and Heavy Traffic.
Toy Story 2 is good but definitely not the greatest.
My list would be:
1. The Lion King
2. Finding Nemo
3. Monster's Inc.
4. The Little Mermaid.
5. Shrek
6. Cinderella
7. Brother Bear
8. The Aristocrats
9. The Spongebob Squarepants Movie!
10. Tinker Bell
Actually I change my 10th choice "Tinker Bell" to "Oliver & Company"!
did you mean "Top 50 Animated American Films?" coz there are many outstanding Japanese animated films out there and none of them were counted.
1. Spirited Away
2. Howls Moving Castle
3. Princess Mononoke
4. The Hobbit
5. Sword In The Stone
6. Ferngully
7. Robin Hood
8. Troll In Central Park
9. The Pagemaster
10. Aladdin
How about this top 10:
1. Beavis and Butthead do America (1996)
2. The Simpsons Movie (2007)
3. Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit (2005)
4. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999)
5. Chicken Run (2000)
6. Toy Story (1995)
7. Monsters Inc. (2001)
8. A Bugs Life (1998)
9. Toy Story 2 (1999)
10. Shrek (2001)
For me, Pinocchio is probably the greatest animated film of all time. But, in this list, are we saying 'best animated' as in, the films were animated really well, or just best film, that is animated? Because, Sleeping Beauty is the most stunning and beautifully perfect film, in terms of animation, but overall it's pretty dull and full of flaws, certainly not one of the best Disney movies.
Anyway, my list, taking into consideration good animation and a good overall film, would probably be
1. Pinocchio
2. Peter Pan
3. Toy Story 2
4. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
5. Finding Nemo
6. The Nightmare Before Christmas
7. Grave of the Fireflies
8. The Jungle Book
9. Fantasia
10. My Neighbour Totoro
Beavis and Butthead Do America should be number 1.
The whole dynamic of animated movies changed since Beavis and Butthead Do America came out. Before Beavis and Butthead Do America, a lot of animated movies were set in fairytale like lands (some still are). After Beavis and Butthead broke this mould most animated movies were (and still are) set in either modern day America (The Simpsons Movie and South Park the Movie) modern day Britain (Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit) or in the future (Futurama: Bender's Big Score)
@Paddy Malone: Any british animated movies per chance?
What about Shrek? In Britain it was the 1st and only animated movie to be nominated for best feature film at the BAFTAs. Two others have been nominated for best british film.
Chicken Run (lost to Billy Elliot)
Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit (won)
As far as memorable moments go the best animated movie is The Simpsons Movie. The moment Bart starts skateboarding naked was when my funnybone ticked the most. Other moments that touches my funnybone include:
Homer and bart on the roof 1
Homer and Bart on the roof 2
Mr. Burns releases the hounds
Homer's pig crap silo in the lake
Homer's chainsaw gag
Spiderpig/Harry Plopper
Homer's fishing accident
Uncle Fucka
Kyle's Mom
Blame Canada
Butthead misreading master station as masturbation
Beavis turning into Cornholio on the plane/in the White house
If there are any other memorable moments in animated movie history, feel free to show them in your next comments.
@demon: There were british movies in that countdown as well. Triplets of Bellevous was french and that was there too.
1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (greatest live-action and animated film ever made!)
2. WALL-E (just aboslutely stunning)
3. Bolt
4. Spirited Away
5. Happy Feet
6. Finding Nemo
7. 9 (2009 animated film)
8. KiKi's Delivery Service
9. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
10. The Simpsons Movie
