After months of speculation, Rooney Mara (pictured) has been announced as landing the lead role of Lisbeth Salandar in David Fincher's American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Daniel Craig who was previously announced as having the role of Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who works with Salander to solve a 40-year-old missing person case.

When last reported we learned the role of Salandar was down to two candidates as Mara was battling it out with Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, The Uninvited) for the role with Mara securing the role.

Mara isn't exactly a surprise candidate as her name has been among those considered all along, not to mention she has a role in Fincher's upcoming Facebook movie The Social Network. Mara, however, is hardly a known name as her most recent roles in Youth in Revolt and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street were supporting at best, but this is a major get for an up-and-coming actress and with Fincher at the helm it is certain to gain her worldwide notice.

Both Craig and Mara are also joined by Stellan Skarsgard and Robin Wright, who were announced as in negotiations last week with Skarsgard eying the role of Martin Vanger, one of the key suspects in the unsolved murder. Wright is eying the role of Erika Berger, Blomkvist's publisher at Millennium magazine and occasional lover.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will begin shooting next month in Sweden from a screenplay by Steve Zaillian. The film is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.

I know several readers from RoS will be happy with this annoucement. But I have no idea of who's this girl. Good luck to her! Even though I think it's almost impossible to top Noomi Rapace's performance.

I just started reading the books and the description of Salandar matches Rapace perfectly, though I haven't gotten far enough along to learn how well her performance matches the books, but I do like her in the films. Mara is lucky though, the Swedish editions won't be seen by enough people in the States to even draw comparison.

I think the description in the books matches Mara (after a make-over, of course) more closely than Rapace. Salander is supposed to have a beautiful, model-like face, and Rapace just looks scary and intimidating. Having read the book and not seen the movie, I don't know how Rapace's performance compares to the character in the book, but I hope Mara tries to be faithful to the character in the book rather than copying Rapace's performance.

If this movie is done right then you just annoucned the best actor and actress winners of next year…plenty of room for some great supporting work to. I cant wait for this movie and Im glad a relatively unknown will take the role

I really hope this version gets it right. I couldn't stand the Swedish adaptation. The acting was good but the way they changed the story just about angered me. Don't care to see the rest from that series.

  4. Very nice pick, she may not top Rapace but she'll most likely be very good. Looking forward to her performance.

It's too bad that Browning lost the role. She would have given a phenomenal performance. I guess she could find another role for a book adaptation?

  6. Mara was the only thing I found tolerable in "Nightmare," and her potential excites me. As it always has, however, my enthusiasm for this remake revolves completely around Fincher.
