'Roommate' Tops Friday Box-Office with 'Sanctum' a Distant Second

Top ten may not even reach $70 million

What a lackluster weekend at the box-office. It seems even the studios want you to stay home and watch the Super Bowl, most likely so they can get you to watch the myriad of trailers they spent millions on. Of course, the snow and ice storms sweeping the country didn't help.

The Roommate was Friday's #1 and will turn that into a weekend win. On Friday the teen thriller took in an estimated $6.4 million, which should translate to about $15.5 million for the weekend. The Roommate wasn't screened for critics so I have no idea if it's any good or not, but a B- Cinemascore tells me it bests the awful James Cameron produced Sanctum, which received a C+ Cinemascore.

Sanctum took in an estimated $3.6 million on Friday, which means it's going to have a really hard time hitting even $8 million considering it's the one new opener Super Bowl audiences would probably be more likely to see.

Last weeks openers tumbled hard with The Rite dropping 63% to $1.9 million and The Mechanic taking in an estimated $1.8 million, with around a 60% overall drop from last weekend expected.

I've included Friday's top ten directly below and will be back on Sunday with a complete wrap-up, but as it looks now the weekend top ten is going to have a hard time even reaching $70 million in total business. Yikes.

  1. The Roommate – $6.4 million
  2. Sanctum – $3.6 million
  3. No Strings Attached – $2.9 million
  4. The King's Speech – $2.3 million
  5. The Rite – $1.9 million
  6. The Green Hornet – $1.8 million
  7. The Mechanic – $1.8 million
  8. True Grit – $1.4 million
  9. The Dilemma – $1.1 million
  10. Black Swan – $1 million

  1. Can someone explain to me the concept of Cinemascore?

Is it just a post-viewing audience poll? Also, the grade-to-quality proportion doesn't make sense to me. Sometimes a B+ is terrible but then a B is amazing. I get that it depends on the film but I just never got why so much weight was put on those scores…

    Another depressing boxoffice weekend!!

  3. Winchester

Unappealing new releases + even with quality holdovers there's only so many times folks will go back to the same films + major sports event = shitty box-office.

It was a good weekend to catch up on rentals and DVR. Four new releases next weekend, very curious on what the Justin Bieber movie does, just to see how popular he currently is, or if he is on the down slope. Teen heartthrobs only last so long.
