Rom-Com or Drama? First Poster for 'Love and Other Drugs'
Late November will provide all the answers
I haven't watched the two different trailer for Fox's upcoming Love and Other Drugs directed by Ed Zwick (Last Samurai) and starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal, but they have divided readers as to what we should expect from this upcoming, supposed Oscar contender. Now a new poster adds to the puzzle.
Hathaway portrays Maggie, a woman with Parkinson's who falls in love with Jamie (Gyllenhaal), a pharmaceutical salesman and their relationship supposedly plays out in the political and social context of the time. Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria, Josh Gad and Gabriel Macht co-star.
Hathaway has been receiving buzz all year long for her performance as she's supposed to be a lock for a Best Actress Oscar nod and some already have her as the front-runner. It's obviously too early to tell, and buzz could have been started by her reps just as much as it could have been reliable sources. We'll just have to wait until it hits theaters on November 24 to find out for ourselves. The R-rating for "strong sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, and some drug material" certainly does add a bit of curiosity to the conversation though.
I added both the international and domestic trailer to my November Fall Preview (I added the domestic just above) if you'd like to see what has people confused, otherwise here's a look at the first poster for this romantic-dramedy?

This poster definitely reminds me of Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep on It's Complicated. It looks like the same bed they used.
I think it'll be a comedy for the first half of the movie, and then transition to a romantic drama in the second half. A good mixture of both, and to me, that's just perfectly fine.
What I find interesting is that the domestic trailer doesn't hint one bit at Hathaway's character having Parkinson's. The international one does a little bit, and thats because the overseas audience will probably be more accepting of that storyline, but if I hadn't read previews in several places, I wouldn't have known about the Parkinson's from the either trailer.
Either way, whether or not you're perfectly fine about this feature being 'a good mixture of both', some may feel cheated by Fox's duplicitous promotion of LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS. This poster looks insipid and common denominator, whereas the original blurb from Regency was that this movie was far from an ordinary rom-com. It may still be but I don't like the way the studio is going about selling this flick.
Well considering whether a person decides something is a comedy is up to the eye of the beholder, I'm not sure how anybody could complain about being cheated. Some people consider The Graduate as one of the greatest comedies ever made, but there are just as many people out there who don't really consider it a comedy. Same thing with Sideways.
The trailer showed both a comedic side and a dramatic side. It's the marketers job to make sure they get people to watch it. It's not like they're using footage from a different film and promising an all out action movie and then giving you something different. Trying to gather an entire movies rythmic tone from a single sheet is rather silly.
Poster certainly makes it look more like a rom-com. I haven't seen any trailers but the Parkinson angle has me interested since I'm employed by the pharmaceutical industry.
I'm not gonna give them to hard a time for this I guess. Even though I didn't see what was so special about this film from either of the trailers, how else are they gonna market it?
Oh. My. Fucking. God. Excuse me.

Okay, I'm back. Prostate drained.
That poster is SO FUCKING HOT. Anne Hathaway is one of my favorite actresses, and Jake Gyllenhaal is one of my favorite actors (and especially one of my favorite sexual icons, thanks to Brokeback). So this poster is about as sexy as a poster can possibly be. :D
I can't wait for the movie!
I don't know… I'd probably just split the difference and simply call it a romance flick. When in doubt, however, I suppose they should sell it as a drama, as I don't think people complain when a drama makes them laugh, but if a comedy isn't ultimately funny then they feel cheated.
I bet you its like Funny People, very funny, but very dramatic also. It will probably be pretty good. But remember guys, Julia Roberts got nominated for Best Actress in Pretty Woman, so it doesn't seem to crazy that Anne could receive a nom or even win for her performance in this.
Not that original of a poster.
