Ridley Scott's 'Alien' Prequel Follows the Story of a Familiar Fossil
Going back in time 30 years...

Details of Ridley Scott's as yet Untitled Alien Prequel leaked online at the end of the week last week as MTV spoke to Scott during the press junket for Robin Hood.
Scott said they are working on the fourth draft of the script and discussed the details of the story for the first time, which not only confirm the timeline Scott discussed with Empire last October, but also adds new details and gives you an idea as to why I included the image above. Here's what he had to say:
It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle – there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair. Remember that?
And our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says "There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out – what was that?" I'm basically explaining who that Space Jockey – we call him the Space Jockey – I'm explaining who the space jockeys were.
[The] main character [in the prequel] will be a woman, yeah. We're thinking it could go down that route, yeah. When I started the original "Alien," Ripley wasn't a woman, it was a guy. During casting, we thought, "Why don't we make it a woman?"
Scott adds he will need to design "or redesign" the appearance of the alien creatures saying, "I don't want to repeat it. The alien in a sense, as a shape, is worn out." He also says he will again consult with original Alien designer H.R. Giger.
Scott was also quoted by Collider saying he's looking to make two new Alien prequel films referring to them as "prequel one and two," but right now the focus is on the first film only. He's also confirmed an earlier report from Shadowlocked in which art-director Roger Christian told the site, "Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3D.
Now, as for that earlier comment on the Space Jockey (pictured above and in greater detail to the right), I went back and watched the scene from Scott's Alien in which Skerritt as Dallas refers to the alien saying, "Looks like it's been dead a long time. Fossilized." Listening to Scott's commentary over the scene this is what he had to say:
I think the "space jockey" is somehow the pilot and he's part of a military operation – if that's the word you want to apply to his world – and therefore this is probably some kind of carrier, a weapon carrier, a biological or biomechanoid carrier of lethal eggs; inside of which are these small creatures that will actually, fundamentally integrate in a very aggressive way into any society or any place it's dropped.
So that should give you something of a starting point as to what to expect as Scott also told MTV he's "hoping to have [the prequel] in theaters in late 2011, or maybe the best date in 2012."

I'm just happy that Ridley Scott is going back to sci-fi. The man is a genius when it comes to the genre.
Well, this definitely looks like something to anticipate. I love just about anything Ridley Scott does, especially his original 'Alien' movie. Though, I am always a bit skeptical when 3D is involved. We'll just have to see.
Yeah I agree with the 3D. i sometimes think it can turn into too much of a visual specatacle and can be too heavy 4 the film but im sure Scott knows what he's doing.
This sounds awesome, although I think I will stick to seeing it in 2D. Sorry, Ridley.
I'm excited for this, but a woman again? I appreciate the originals for that but now it's become like some kind of must have for the Alien movies. I don't understand why. I mean, make it a Japanese guy or something if they want to break a barrier.
Ridley Scott is awesome though.
What do you have against women? All the best action "heroes" are women. Girls kick ass. I suggest you grow a pair.
@Brad Brevet: Sir Ridley has announced that there will be "two" Alien prequels, as confirmed below by EMPIRE Magazine.

While I'm very excited about the master going back to his original sci-fi masterpiece for more Alien fun, I'm still a little confused. I thought the "space jockey's" were aliens themselves. But, Ridley has confirmed that a woman is going to be the star? So, is it going to be a human woman or an alien one?
Regardless, I can't wait for the trailer to be released.
I haven't been this excited about an upcoming film in years!!!! I'm a die-hard Alien fan. Maybe someone will re-make the second part of Alien vs Predator. What they released was the ultimate slap in the face to any fan of the films. The best part was the first minute or two where we saw a bit of the Predator world. The film was over after that. Anyway – Wooohooo for Ridley – he's the man. If he won't do it – no one can.
This is wonderful news! I will be looking forward to this film with a great deal of anticipation.
So how is the SJ gonna walk around considering he grew out of the chair? Hope we arent in for a re-design, cheat here! Love the original film so much, its absolute class, dont want to see this turn into an effort. By the way fossilization would take a lot longer then 30 years too! The truth is; Hollywood hasnt made any movies on par with the original since at least the late eighties, early nineties. They just dont make em like that anymore, so, heres to hopeing Ridley can somehow change all that. Personally, I believe theres not a hope of any of that changing, unless you remove the people that call the shots in Hollywood these days. And we all know that aint gonna happen soon.
