Last year I posted a top ten list ranking Pixar's first ten films seeing how Up made for the animation studio's tenth feature. This weekend Toy Story 3 comes out and I was taking a look over the list again, which went like this:

  1. WALL•E
  2. Ratatouille
  3. Finding Nemo
  4. Toy Story
  5. Up
  6. Cars
  7. The Incredibles
  8. Monsters, Inc.
  9. Toy Story 2
  10. A Bug's Life

Looking it over I think I would change things around a bit now, especially since I have since received Blu-ray editions of Monsters, Inc., Up, Cars, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 giving me additional opportunities to watch each of them.

Up has particularly grown on me, as did Monsters, Inc., which seems to be a movie that gets better each time I see it. I can't say the same thing about the Toy Story films, though I will always contend the first one is the best of the two, even though I will admit the opening sequence to Toy Story 2 was particularly impressive in 3D, even if the film itself doesn't do much for me.

Cars is ranked a little too high on that first list as it really doesn't hold up to what I remember it being as I was one of the few that actually liked it when it first came out, but I am starting to come around to the pack mentality. I said as much in my review of the Blu-ray late last year.

Prior to my screening of Toy Story 3 tomorrow night, here's where I think I stand with a Pixar top ten at the moment:

  1. WALL•E
  2. Ratatouille
  3. Up
  4. Finding Nemo
  5. Monsters, Inc.
  6. Toy Story
  7. The Incredibles
  8. Toy Story 2
  9. Cars
  10. A Bug's Life

You can read my original top ten piece here for some "at-the-time" explanations, but as with all things in life… my opinion keeps on a changin'.

Ratatouille is the best. Toy Story 2 comes close. Monsters, Inc. would be my #3 (or Up, I don't know). All masterpieces.

  2. This list about your opinion is incorrect. It should go like this:

    1. WALL•E
    2. Up
    3. Toy Story
    4. Monsters, Inc.
    5. Finding Nemo
    6. The Incredibles
    7. Toy Story 2
    8. Ratatouille
    9. A Bug's Life
    10. Cars

  3. I just started re-watching all Pixar films last week (in fact, gonna watch The Incredibles right now) in order to make the top of my own in about a week, and also see where would TS3 fit there. But right now my Top 3 remains the same: WALL-E, followed by Finding Nemo, followed by Toy Story 1.

    1. Wall-e
    2. Monsters Inc
    3. Ratatouille
    4. The Incredibles
    5. Toy Story
    6. Up
    7. Toy Story 2
    8. Finding Nemo
    9. Cars
    10. A Bugs Life

For me, it's a tie between WALL-E and Up for my favorite Pixar film. Both are so visually and thematically mature as well as emotionally tender.

  6. Chris138

Ratatouille is my all time favorite, with Toy Story and Up right behind it.

    1. Finding Nemo
    2. Toy Story
    3. Monsters Inc.
    4. Toy Story 2
    5. Up
    6. Wall-E
    7. Cars
    8. Ratatouille
    9. The Incredibles
    10. A Bugs Life

I really love WALL-E, The Incredibles and Toy Story 2. I can't place two in any particular order, but "Wall-E" is #1 on my rank.

  9. Chip

This is mine at the moment:

    1. Toy Story
    2. Toy Story 2
    3. The Incredibles
    4. Finding Nemo
    5. Up
    6. Monsters Inc.
    7. WALL-E
    8. Ratatouille
    9. A Bug's Life
    10. Cars

Obviously, Toy Story 3 should shake things up a bit.

  10. The Incredibles is my favorite. After that, I'd rank them all about the same. I think the only one I haven't seen is Ratatouille.

  11. 1) Wall-E – As close to perfect as I've ever seen. I love this movie so freakin' much.

    2) The Incredibles – One of the best superhero movies of all time.

    3) Monster's Inc – This was the first DVD we ever bought, so I watched it dozens of times when I was ten or so. I still love it to this day.

    4) Ratatouille – Instant classic, and IMO their "cutest" movie.

    5) Toy Story 2 – The attention to detail and effectiveness of the emotional content works on me every time.

    6) Toy Story – Almost as good as the second, and a true classic for what it started.

    7) Finding Nemo – Probably Pixar at their funniest, and the characters are wonderful. (Not sure why I have it this low, but it goes to show how much I love their entire body of work.)

    8) Up – Didn't work for me as much as everyone else, so I only liked it a whole bunch, as opposed to instant love. Maybe I need a re-watch.

    9) Cars – Hated it on the first viewing, but actually kinda liked it on repeated viewings.

    10) A Bug's Life – Just mediocre. Eh.

So, except the last two, I freakin' love me some Pixar.

I know I'm DEEP in the minority when stating the "WALL*E" is incredibly overrated. For me, it's half a great film, half a clumsy didacticism.

The opening section is quite enchanting and remarkable, even elegant. Once the story travels into space, however, the message (with all the subtlety of the takeaway message of "Crash") was so ham-fisted and preachy and so utterly off-putting that it completely overshadowed any charm and enjoyment I'd had with the first bit.

I'm still a little bit baffled by its universal acclaim and popularity.

The Incredibles IS the best superhero movie ever
    WHERE IS MY SUPER SUIT?!?!?

  15. Cory

I miss your top ten lists, when are we getting another one? Perhaps a top 5 Christopher Nolan list prior to the release of Inception?

  16. Kash

I think most will agree that ranking PIXAR films is quite unnecessary since every one of their films is unique and brilliant in its own way.

Almost 100% sure that Toy Story 3 will add one more to PIXAR's list of masterpieces…can not wait!

    1. Up
    2. Toy Story 2
    3. Finding Nemo
    4. Monsters Inc
    5. Ratatouille

Up and Toy Story 2 are listed as my top favorites because both had scenes that made me cry … quite an accomplisment for any movie to move me that much and even more incredible for animation….

Let's all agree that Pixar has found out that great storytelling can touch people's hearts….

    10. A Bug's Life: Mediocre, at least by Pixar standards.

    9. Monsters, Inc.: Too cutesy, with no real crossover appeal to adults in my opinion.

    8. Up: One of the most disappointing films of last year for me; I don't think this is anywhere near the quality of their best films. I found the emotion to be extremely heavy-handed, the humor lacked much of the wit that their best films have, and the talking dog and the stupid fat Asian kid are, to me anyway, by far the most annoying characters Pixar has ever conceived.

Everything from here up I consider to be very, very good.

    7. Cars: This was really just a crowd-pleaser, but I love it. The story is pretty simple but still touching, it's very funny, and it covers a period/aspect of American history that doesn't get much attention (the Route 66 era, for lack of a better term).

    6. Finding Nemo: This didn't blow my away, at least in terms of story, but it has a good story and is very funny. And I still think it's their second most impressive film visually, after Wall-E.

    5. The Incredibles: I've actually only seen this twice, and the last time was five years ago, so its place on my list is the least stable. But I definitely loved it; just a great action-comedy.

    4. Toy Story: An absolute classic and incredibly quotable.

    3. Toy Story 2: This one has a greater emotional aspect, and frankly, more of a plot than the first one.

    2. Ratatouille: An incredibly sophisticated film, probably their best written. I personally think that, as least in terms of the dialog, it's really more of a film for adults than kids.

    1. Wall-E: An absolute masterpiece. I'd rank it the second-best film of 2008 behind only The Dark Knight. Which means that yes, I definitely think it should have been nominated for Best Picture.

    1. Wall-E: While the masses go for Toy Story and Nemo, this imho is their best film.
