Quaid Joins the Ernie Davis 'Express'
Another football story makes ready for the big screen
Wow, football movies sure are on the rise, our second of 2006 is due out later this month and Invincible was relatively well received on its way to a modest $57 million at the box. Now, we have yet another one, but this looks like it will be more of a human story as Dennis Quaid is set to play a part in The Express for Universal Pictures and director Gary Fleder.
The pic centers on Ernie Davis, the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy who died of leukemia. The film is sure to pull at the heart strings as Davis never got to play professionally, dying at age 23.
Quaid will play Ben Schwartzwalder, the head football coach at Syracuse Univ. who watched Davis come in and restore the Orangemen as a national power. Studio is now finalizing candidates to play Davis. Production kicks off in March.
