UPDATE: Universal has issued the following statement confirming Jurassic Park IV has been put on an indefinite hold and will no longer be hitting theaters June 2014:

In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal's beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise's storied history.

The original post follows...

Ain't It Cool News spotted the following two tweets from Jurassic Park IV Digital Asset Manager Todd Smoyer and Concept Artist Dean Sherriff coming out and saying the fourth installment in the dino-franchise has been put on hold. Both tweets have since been deleted, though a few of Smoyer's responses to fans remain including one saying, "Oh it's still gonna happen and when it does it's gonna be EPIC!" which essentially sounds like someone from the studio got to him, especially considering dream crushing was the focus of his original tweet.

Filming was expected to begin soon on the film under the direction of Safety Not Guaranteed helmer Colin Trevorrow who only recently tweeted the picture you see at the top of this post with one word: "Nublar".

Jurassic Park 4 was targeting a June 13, 2014 release and I can only imagine news will surface soon as to what exactly is going on with the production, but it isn't as if this comes as a major surprise as not a single cast member had been announced yet.

I can't see how a likely major visual effects movie gets cast, pre-pro'd then shot and has post completed in what would be barely 12 months. It's way too tight for something like a JP film.

I'm not saying it won't get made, but not for that release date they planned.

I can't say I didn't laugh at the tweet, "Hollywood makes and crushes dreams. Goodbye JP4." It was a bitter laugh, due to the level of truth in the tweet, but I still feel a little bad.

Too bad for Colin Trevorrow. At least he has another project he can do.

could be the best thing to happen to CT, if JP4 was a disaster it might take him a long time to recover with only Safety Not Guaranteed behind him

^Exactly. Hopefully now he moves on to a mid-level budget project that has more chance to impress.

I'm hopeful for this one, so this isn't good news

I don't think we need a fourth one. I mean, the first three were all so bad..

Hm, I can see where you're coming from on the sequels -- III especially, and The Lost World is a definitely a drop in quality from the first -- but I'm a big fan of the original Jurassic Park. It's one of the first movies, perhaps the first movie, I remember seeing as a young child, and it has stayed with me ever since.

No complaints here. Three were more than enough. Let's hope that a fourth one never happens, although I'm sure that it will at some point. I know that sounds cruel, but I really don't think another Jurassic Park is needed at this point.
