Sex-trafficking dramas and special-ops thrillers need marketing too

Universal Pictures has to be kicking themselves that they didn't have a trailer for Dream House ready when it was announced Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig had secretly married only a few days ago. The two co-star as husband and wife in Dream House, which just earned an R-rating that is being appealed and Universal still doesn't have a trailer for the feature despite the September 30 release date. Oops.

One of Weisz's films that does have a trailer, and now new a shiny new poster, is her upcoming sex-trafficking drama/thriller The Whistleblower of which I saw in Toronto last year and liked, but didn't love (read my review here), though I did dote plenty on Weisz's perfromance. I wrote:

As the stakes get raised the movie improves, primarily based on Weisz's performance. Weisz is the only thing that keeps it going and in a scene late in the picture she really goes for it and lands a blow that elevates this film above its average origins, but she can't deliver an overall saving grace.

Inspired by a true story, Weisz plays Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska police officer turned Bosnian peacekeeper, who uncovers a disturbing sex-trafficking underworld and its shocking connection to the UN. The film's director, Larysa Kondracki, just won the Best Director prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.

Check out the first poster below and look for the film in theaters on August 5.

Next is a poster for Killer Elite starring Jason Statham, Robert De Niro and Clive Owen. Inspired by true events, the film centers on a special-ops agent (Statham) who gets together his old team to rescue his former mentor (De Niro), but he'll have to face off against a covert group of ex-SAS soldiers known as "The Feather Men," under their leader Spike (Owen).

The trailer for the film debuted only recently (watch here) and it is set to hit theaters on September 23. Check out the poster directly below.

Saw "Dream House" last year in a preview screening. Other than the performances of Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig, which are compelling and they do have great chemistry together on screen (And apparently off;), the movie itself is unfortunately pretty bad thanks to a very predicable script, in which my sister and i was able to guess the ending an half hour into the movie.

I'm hearing great things from friends however for "The Whistle blower", especialy for Weisz's performance.

Jason Statham and Clive Owen are very similar in that they are in a ton of action films whose box office ceiling seems to be $40mil domestically and not much better internationally. Not expecting too much from "Killer Elite" in that case.

  3. Really looking forward to "Killer Elite". Being a big Clive Owen fan, though, I'm not too fond of that tagline: "May The Best Man Live". Since Clive's playing the bad guy here, I get the feeling I'll be forced to watch him die!
