Portman Makes Right Move and Ditches 'Wuthering Heights'

We did't need number 15 or whatever it was going to be

A month after the announcement that Natalie Portman would play the lead in yet another production based on Emily Brontë's only novel "Wuthering Heights" we learn from Variety the actress has ditched the project for an as-yet-unknown production.

Variety calls the news shocking since Portman was one of the driving forces behind the film, but perhaps she wised up and realized we don't really need another film based on this novel. It's been done to death. I like it when writers twist old tales into new stories, call it something different or at least give it a little something refreshing, but this was set to be just another adaptation, which spells "boring".

Surprise or not, it isn't like this was a fast moving train. When announced in April there wasn't a director attached or a start date. However, the film is now set to begin in the fall with director John Maybury aboard to helm without a star. That could be tricksy. A male lead may have been found in Michael Fassbender, as he is in advanced negotiations to play Heathcliff.

Outside of the unannounced film Portman also plans to make her directorial debut on A Tale of Love and Darkness, which is an adaptation of Israeli writer Amos Oz’s memoir.
