The Fall 2012 Movie Box-Office Draft competition involved both Brad and Laremy "drafting" ten films each in hopes of scoring the largest net total by taking a film's worldwide gross subtracting two-and-a-half-times the reported budget. The film must be released between the months of September-December 2012. The draft took place on August 28 during the RopeofSilicon Podcast which you can listen to right here.

Listed above is all the most recent data as of this post. Budgetary information is not necessarily accurate and will most likely not be accurate until closer to or after each film's release.

I gotta say Moonrise Kingdom for me was one of the most over-rated movies of 2012. I dont mind Wes Anderson, but this effort was totally forgettable. I dont think he will ever be able to top Fantastic Mr. Fox.

As for Magic Mike, it could well have made my top 10 had it not been for the awful acting by Cody Horn. Her performance seriously hurt the overall movie for me; a film cannot be top 10 material if basics like acting can't fit the bill.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/AS/ AS

Interesting. When it comes to Anderson my favorite has always been The Life Aquatic (with everything else far behind).

      • adu

Life Aquatic would be my second favorite Wes Anderson movie and like you, the rest are far behind.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/G-Man/ G-Man

Yes - I'm very curious how many people liked the actual story of Moonrise Kingdom. I agree that the cinematography, art direction, colors, etc. were fantastic. But looking at the plot, I found it incredibly boring and rather uneventful. The characters are interesting and quirky, but I felt no connection with any of them.

    • http://www.criterion.com/my_criterion/27913-criterion10 Criterion10

I loved Moonrise Kingdom when I first saw it back in the theaters, but it hasn't really stuck with me since. I just bought the Blu-Ray, so I'm interested to see how it'll hold up on a second viewing.

I liked Magic Mike much more than I expected to, and I'd be interested to see it again, as it may actually be one of the few films this year that I can say I really liked.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Aleonardis/ Aleonardis

Moonrise is weird for me. At points it's hilarious. I mean, the soundbite at the end of the podcast out of context slays me. It's just that the Anderson we saw on Fox is the exact same Anderson here. Which is fine. A little more cute than normal Anderson, but sophisticated still. It's just that without the animation, it makes the film a little slight for some reason. Whereas Fox felt GIANT while I knew it was microscopic. I'm still perplexed by the movie. And it's not that I don't like it either. I gave it a B-

SOOOOO happy you address shaky-cam in movies. I absolutely hate it and it completely takes me out of the movie (unless the characters are holding the camera). I wish film makers would learn to get a damn tripod/dolly.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/AS/ AS

If it's done well (Greengrass) I think it can significantly enhance the experience and make you feel as if you're right in the action.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Xarnis/ Xarnis

I too was going to use Greengrass as an example for good shakycam. I love all of his movies (aside from 'Green Zone') which was mediocre.

Hey GregDinskisk, are you interested in a box office rematch? If so, would you want to do what Brad and Laremy did and stick to January/February releases, or make it a Winter/Spring draft and cover films from January through the end of April?

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/G-Man/ G-Man

SPOILER - Zero Dark Thirty - SPOILER:

Interesting how you guys enjoyed Jason Clarke's character. That was my one criticism of the film. He was such a prominent character in the first half, and then he kind of falls completely out of the picture when things start to get interesting, except for the short trip to Kuwait.

Oh Brad, so glad to hear Seeking a Friend for the end of the World is going to be on your worst list. It's my worst film of the year.

Laremy, the $1.16 means you get $116 back from the $100 bet, just a $16 profit, I have no idea what the fractional odds are :) Enjoyed the discussion, jumped on Silver Linings and of course Tommy Lee.

Australia in February Laremy, awesome. Best time of the year, it will be hot hot hot!

  • Justin

Brad where do you see RoS in 10 years? Or a better question is where do you think online film journalism will be in 10 years? More of the same or continually getting worse? [Justin]

    Buy/Sell

B&L will crossover with 2.5 podcasts in 2013 (Filmdrunk is a given, could Criterion Cast be a possibility?) [Justin]

One of Brad or Laremy's top 10 in 2013 will come out in January/Febuary [Justin]

    "I hate minorities!!"

Thanks for another year dudes! It's been fun. :)

Brad & Laremy, just wanted to wish you guys a happy Christmas and thanks for an amazing year of podcasts!

    • http://www.theoriolereport.com Bob Phelan

Agreed. This and Film Junk are easily the two best movie podcasts available. (1 and 1A, they both do different things)

      Merry Christmas gentlemen.

  • http://www.theoriolereport.com Bob Phelan

A big reason I have a lot of respect for film critics, and I'm wondering if you ever felt this way, is that while I would consider myself a reasonably intelligent, well spoken person I have a hard time explaining why I do or do not like a movie. It more just a gut feeling for me and I just know. Either a movie draws me in completely or not. I find this very frustrating because I love movies so much I wish I was better versed in them.

Laremy, did you notice Davindra really liked Lincoln? "Tough rocks pal"

[Listener Question] In light of the recent massacre in Connecticut, will uneasiness toward Jack Reacher's opening scene trump positive word-of-mouth and hurt its second weekend box office? [Kai Sacco]
